Transporting birds with dog to field

Post by ToddW7 » Thu Jun 16, 2011 2:35 pm

How do you transport your birds to the training field? I am first time bird dog owner (13 week old Brittany) and this may be an elementary question. I have exposed her to live birds on two occasions. The first time I put the birdcage in the back seat of my truck and the pup in the bed of the truck. This worked fine and the pup seemed surprised when she found the first bird. Second time I decided I didn't want to smell the birds all the way to the field so I put the cage in the truck bed and brought the pup to the truck. Immediately she wanted to jump in the pickup bed. I put her in her crate in the bed and drove her to the field. She was hyper all the way to the field, but not as surprised to find the birds on our walk in the field.

I usually have the birds in a cage in the back seat, with the dogs in the box in the truck bed.

I put the birds between the dog box and cab. It is funny to watch all those tongues lick the air smelling the birds.

We use a carrier called Cabin Kennel Pet carrier for birds, it is easy access to slip your hand in at the top and get birds out..This carrier will slip in a dog food bag for hauling the birds with you..You can get it at Amazon #060....Try this thepetstoreonline.com "petmate cabin kennel wiretop carrier" #21060

I have a dog that will literally throw her head up into the kennel door howling until her muzzle will bleed if there are birds in the truck bed so I generally put the birds in the back seat.
