Pointing drill

I was watching a George Hickox video and he was talking about picking up a fog and carrying it away when you are done doing a pointing drill and your dog is steady to W&S. This is when birds are not being shot over the dog. Anyone have comments on this? Ups or downs?

I've always done it that way when working a pup on point. After the pointing sequence is over I pick the dog up and carry him from the bird field. It was the way I was taught way back when and I still do it today. I think that it reinforces the concept to the dog that he can't move by his own choosing while on birds. I even do it with older dogs while steadying them to wing and shot. I don't know if it helps, but I have always done it that way.

I think what Ryan is talking about is after a dog has done a session with the described STW and/or shot you "pick up" the dog which I believe is refering to just leading the dog off the field. Some grab the dogs collar and lift them up and lead them to start another run to the next bird so they arent dilly daling around the old scent or they are done with training and are putting the dog up.
Is this what you mean Ryan by carring the dog?

I have heard of carrying a dog off point, and I never really saw the "point" of it. (no pun intended.) We train or dogs to simply "come" after a bird is flushed and the shot. Easy enough to train with a CC.

or heel away. too much handling of the dog going on if you are picking him up and removing him from the field. don't see the point.

That hasn't been my experience. Although, I would agree that other methods probably work just as well.

That's when not flushing the bird. Pick dog up (usually it is puppy)
and carry a distance away.
