Here or come?
Here or come?
Is the command "here" or "come" a personal preference or is the use of one word better than the other?
Also, do you use your dog's name as the command to retrieve? I have been doing this with my pup, but I started wondering if this is proper. Since the kids use her name to call her or to get her attention.
Thanks.

Re: Here or come?
Personal preference I'd say. I use here. The pro uses come. So now it's come 'ere.
Some people will use the dog's name to release the dog from a point, some dog's come a runnin' when they hear their name. Really it's up to you to keep any confusion to a minimum.

Re: Here or come?
Here is a sharp command, come a sexual one.
The dog retrieves to it's name.
If you run searches or blinds, use Back for the command.

Re: Here or come?
Come means "Come to me" I want to touch you .
"Here" means come to the front. If I want the dog to come to the front or change directions I use HERE. I don`t want the dog deadheading back to me with a Come command.
Just how I do it.

I like "Here" because I can draw it out longer the "Come" HERRRRRRRRRE. While "come" is harder to draw out.I think it carries further in the field.

Depends on the dog. One of my puppy buyers named his pup "Stain." I told him that with a name like that, he'd better switch to 'here' and stop using 'come' when he calls the dog

Two cannibals were eating a clown. One looks up at the other and says, "Does this taste funny to you?"

I teach and Prefer the word HERE
one of the biggest reasons I prefer HERE over the word Come...here can be projected from deeper in the diaphragm so you can call it out louder and longer and it carries further where Come is a top of the lung much shorter sounding word

Friends of mine think I'm crazy, but the dogs know the difference. It works great when hunting and the dogs are going out of the legal hunting area. We taught them: Come, This Way, and Over Here.
Come: come to me so I can touch you
Over Here: change direction and hunt closer to me
This Way: change direction to the direction that I am headed, but you don't need to get closer to me.
Dogs have the ability to learn a lot more commands than the average person thinks they can learn.
