Duck Search

Post by ACooper » Mon Apr 19, 2010 8:05 pm

I Set up my first duck search for Dez tonight , I dont have a ton of cover on my pond but do have good cover around the pond and the duck performed perfectly. I had my better half hide across the pond and toss the duck out. I made Dez stand through three shots from my blank pistol and then sent him for the retrieve, he took off like a rocket, gets to the other side and the duck dives. He lost contact but never stopped searching the duck popped up out in the middle of the pond and off he goes after it. Well as you can guess when Dez gets close the ducks dives again and heads back across the pond and pops up right on the edge and while Dez is swimming and looking the duck sneaks off into the grass. Dez searched for about 10-11 minutes before he finds the track where the duck left the water and took it straight to him and then brought it all the way back to me. I couldn't be happier with his first search. He never showed any sign of wanting to stop.

Sounds like a great start. As your dog gets a couple more under his belt, take him to some different locations. Some dogs have trouble when faced with different waters and types of cover.
A duck search is a lot of fun to watch when done by a dog that wants it.
Good luck.

Luckily I have access to other water close, and we have an active NAVHDA chapter I should have him going in multiple bodies of water as we progress. I am pretty fired up with his start.

Sounds like the duck search will be a cinch for your dog. Make sure you work on resending him in case he comes back with the duck early and the judges want to see more.

If you resend the dog there MUST be something for the dog to find . NEVER dry fire your dog .

I 100% agree and will add, do some sending with no gun fire! That is the mistake I made with Abby. I always sent with gunfire. I didnt know any better and now I need to re teach the search/resend.

Sounds like you are doing a GREAT job though. It is alot of fun isnt it!

All look way better than the water I have here at home or any I have access to. I do need to come over and work him soon. I doubt I will be here for the next training day.

Coveyrise64,

That water looks awesome! I wish I could find something like that out here! The NAVHDA chapter I train with does not even have water that nice! You are one lucky man.
