Woodcock Spring training time

Post by Ruffshooter » Sun Mar 07, 2010 3:41 pm

Was out working in the yard, and near stepped on a little male wood cock. :) They are on their way back. It is time to start the spring training on wild birds for a couple months. I like this time of year at least in the woods. Hate the mud though.

I was wondering about taking my dogs to a Missouri Conservation Area during the spring to train on some woodcock. I probably need to check with the local agent but is it legal to go out anytime during the spring to work the dog on these birds? I thought there was a rule about not bothering wildlife during mating seasons? Also since they are a migratory, is this activity protected on a Federal level?

I was at an MCD area the other night and heard about 10 birds peenting so they are definitely here. :D

The "quiet" period in Michigan is from April 15th - July 15th unless you have a banding permit.
