Collar Probes

Problem - As I've stated before in a different thread, my Weim is a head shaker, wet, dry, clean, dirty, he shakes his head. The problem that I am having is that when he's weaing his e-collar, Innotek Sport Trainer (I know I know, but it's what I bought) and he shakes his head in the field, the probes wear a sore in his neck. The collar is tight enough, any tighter would be too tight. My question, are there any probes that are smaller than the ones that come with the collar? I have the large ones and the small ones. Are there any that are even smaller that would help to alleviate this? He has little to no hair on his neck and the probes wouldn't have to be very big at all to make solid skin contact. Thanks in advance!

I would have the dogs ears checked? It sounds odd that he/she is shaking its head?

Right on Tak! There must be a reason it is shaking that much. Its not a normal thing to do. Ear problems will lead to headshaking but are sometimes hard to find and diagnose.

BD 67 how long is the dog wearing the collar at a time? I'm not doubting your word, but it seems to me it would take a long time to wear the hair off from shaking. I'm thinking one of two things..... Allergy to the metal in the probes, or burns from the shock. I've seem hot bark collars do that before, on a stuburn dog. Also I'm in 100% agreement with the ear thing. That would be a lot of shaking for a dog to do just while training in the field.
Just my thoughts and ramblings............"pear"

He used to get ear infections quite often as a pup. Since then I've been very meticulous about keeping his ears checked and clean. At first that's what I thought it was but it isn't the case. I think he just doesn't like the collar on to be honest.
Pear - Latest example was this past Sunday. He had the collar on a total of 25 minutes as we limited on pheasants right away. I never had to use the collar for correction so it's not a burn from the shock. Also, the only hair that he has on the underside of his neck is VERY fine and sparse as with most Weims. That's why I was inquiring as to the availability of very short/almost flat probes.
Thanks all for your input! If there are anymore ideas I'm open to suggestions. Thanks again.

Thanks for the input Pear it really is appreciated. So assuming that it may be an allergic reaction to the metal...................................what would/could I do about it?

pear-
just a footnote. those hot spots from bark collars are not caused by shock. they are caused by simple prolonged contact and heat. they look to me to be a mild infection on the skin. you get some slime or puss on the skin to start with. if the collar is not removed, this can become very serious very quickly. the prongs can literally melt into the neck. the moral of the story is that those bark collars need to be removed for periods of time, every day or two, and you need to check daily, especially during hot and/or humid weather, for signs that the hot spots are forming.

BD 67 I have an Innotek brand collars (2dog trainer) and it came with short probes and longer probes for long haired dogs. Maybe check with Innotek if they have diffrent sizes available.

Thanks BB, I also have the 2 different sized probes and will check to see if there is another size option.

Hey Pear,
Emailed Innotec and they are sending me a pair of probes (Free of charge!) that are coated. We'll see if that makes a difference.

BD67, I'll be interested to hear. Just doesn't seem like it could be just wearing the hair off that quick. Let us know......"pear"

Not real sure. The rep wasn't very descriptive in the email that she sent but I will let you know as soon as I get them.

Received the probes in the mail yesterday. They are the same size as the original small probes and are coated in black paint except on the tips which I would assume is for conductivity.
Tried the collar again this weekend with the same results. *shake shake shake* and the skin get's scraped by the probes.
Thinking of maybe putting the collar on backwards so that the probes are on the back of his neck instead......................? Anyone ever tried this?

I suggest not using an e-collar at all.
