To each there own. One thing that I think is just a waste is training scents. I have had dogs smell it and then lift a leg on it.
One great thing to have is just a good Check Cord and some sort of collar, take your pick.....

after doing the rick smith seminar..I have to say the command lead is a real good one better then any pinch collar.. Check cords I mostly like about an 8 fot check cord ofr 80 percent of teh work and a 20 footer for the rest.
my e collars, GLOVES, bird hobbles and cord for bird flushing...and lots of patience

I would defiantly get and e collar, check cord, bird launchers, bird harnesses, slip leads, whistle, a retrieving dummy.

Here is a bare-bones kit for the cash-strapped college student:

- Check cord. Mine are 12' because I'm 6'2" tall and it's easy for me to measure that length. Get a very stiff one that won't tangle when you let the dog drag it. I order mine from Dresslers.

- If you don't have access to wild birds, pigeons and 3 remote launchers. Search the forums for plans on how to build the yourself.

- Cap pistol.

- A place with mowed fields to let your dog run.

- A place that you can launch birds and pop the cap pistol w/o getting arrested.

Hope that helps,

All good suggestions. A couple of things I would be lost without is my green bird bad from Dresslers and my bird carrier from the same place. Of course my launchers, e-collar, CC (which is the basic mt climbing rope), and whistle.

In addition to everything mentioned, it's a good idea to always pack some cold water. Whether it be in a squirt bottle on your hip or in an old milk jug left in the truck, I'm sure your dog will appreciate being able to grab a quick drink after a romp/training session on a summer day.

I have seen them camel ones where they go into your backpack and have a hose coming out. I hutn with a guy who trained his dogs to drink from the water coming out of the house. Seems to work great.

A refilled Gatorade squirt bottle works great too.... at least, until you play watergun and squirt the dog's back down to cool him off. Justus freaked a little when I did that unexpectedly and it took a bit of coaxing to get him to drink from the squirt bottle again.

Ya that woudl work too but you have to dig it out of your vest. WIth this a hose just clips to your vest. you could buy one of them fly fishing fly dryers and take the pad off. Attatch the string to the hose and it would be retractable. This way it doesnt swing around.
