Vizsla fence jumping
Vizsla fence jumping
Im getting a Vizsla and have read up on them. Ive read that they can jump 6 feet! I have a 4 foot fence in my yard... you think this will be a problem?? Anyone have experience with Vizslas jumping a fence like this?? Could training prevent this, or will he always have the urge to jump and chase small animals??? Ive read and heard they are very eager to please. Will this trait help when I disapline him if he does it?? Thanks in advance.
Exactly, I couldnt handle it if he ever got out (im sure you guys feel the same way about your dogs). Im gonna have to invest in an electric fence, its well worth it. Especially cause I live right by a few busy roads. One of my Dalmations got hit when I was young. Luckily she only broke her leg. It was a horrible experience, I could never handle it again.Ryan wrote:We have a 6 footer. Our britts used to jump right over our 5 with ease but clould ever get on the 6 footer. Rather be safe than sorry.
If I install an electric fence, how hard would it be to reinstall somewhere else??

I have a 1 yr old Vizsla who's backyard only has a 4 ft. chainlink fence. I've never had any problems with her getting out. Although I don't think it would be any problem for her to do it. She does routinely put her front legs on the top and try to look over, but has never tried to jump out. Anytime she is out there, I am home, I've never left her outside while I was away from home. If I ever did see her jump the fence, I would quickly come up with some other way to contain her. I too live near a fairly busy street so it's not hard to imagine that something bad could happen.
Good luck with your V.

I do not have one but I have looked at them. They are not hard to move. The actual unit that makes the fence shock is just screwed into a wall at home so it will just unscrew. If you want to take the wire it is only down and inch or two so it can be pulled right up. Easy as 1,2,3 to move.fdsjr wrote:Exactly, I couldnt handle it if he ever got out (im sure you guys feel the same way about your dogs). If you are wanting to insure the dog does not get out I would suggest a cover over it no matter how tall and probably also have the wire a couple of feet into the ground. The point being that a dog that wants out can climb most any fence or dig under it. I think the 4 ft will be ok for most dogs but they need to be in a kennel and probably locked if you have concerns about their safety. I've never seen a dog jump a 4 ft fence but have seen many climb them as well as 6 ft ones as well. In all honesty it depends on your dog and also just what might be on the other side some day that it really wants. And once it gets out it will do it again and again.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Another factor I was thinking of while sitting her eis just becasue your dog will not jump a 4 foot fence doesnt mean sombody wont steal him out of a 4 foot fence. I dont know about where you are from but here if you got a purebred dog and alot of people know it is sure to be missing unless u got a tall fence. Last year a lasies daschhound bitch and her puppies were stolen all in 1 night while the people were home. THey had let the dogs out to play in the yard while they ate and when they went to fetch the pups in when they were done the pups and mother were gone.

Also remember that just because a dog CAN jump that high doesn't mean they will. We use a standard baby-gate to keep Justus in the kitchen at times. Even when we are in the living room and he can see us and wants in there REAL BAD... he has never jumped the baby gate. It's 2 feet tall, max.
Can he jump it? Heck yeah. Does he know it? I don't know, but it doesn't seem like it.
Biggest concern with a 4-foot fence, as mentioned, is someone getting in your fence to take your dog out.

My dog will live in the house but will go outside to do his business, run around and get exercise, play fetch, sit by the fire, or whatever else ill be doing out there. Basically because of some posts ive decided to be out there with him at all times. I have a Dalmation and do the same with him. Although I dont monitor him at all times and havent had a problem. I just let him out when hes at the door and let him in when hes at the door again. But when ever were outside they are to. Weve done this for both of our purebred Dalmations, and fortunatly they have never been stolen.portsider44 wrote:Will this be a yard dog or house dog?
As far as someone stealing my dog... what precausions can I take to prevent this?? Im getting him microchipped, but I dont know about tattooing yet. He'll have a name tag and lisence. Someone mentioned a high covered fence would help, I cant afford that though.
At about what age do you think my Vizsla will be able to jump a 4 foot fence??

A four-foot fence will not keep an athletic dog contained if it wants to get out. I would build a taller one if you're okay with the aesthetics.
One of my red setters has decided she likes to climb my four-foot wooden fence to explore the countryside. She's small (under 40 lbs.) and doesn't look like she would be able to get out but does it easily now. I had the fence built about three years ago (before I got her) and perhaps should have done a taller one but was concerned it would have obstructed the view behind my house.
I've decided to build kennels/runs in my back yard. I'm also tired of the back yard and porch looking like a war zone so think kennels will help this problem too.
My brother uses an electronic fence for his dogs and it seems to work okay. The problem is it doesn't keep other dogs out. Also, I recall reading (perhaps on another board) of cases where it can confuse a dog when you're using an e-collar in the field but I have no first-hand knowledge of this.

i have a 6ft fence in the back & a 4ft in the front chain link. both dogs could jump or climb over but as steven has said i don't know if they know they can get over it. so far my gordon jumps the highest and could clear it if he was to jump up & forward and not just up. as a young dog i wouldn't worry and he may never learn to clear the fence your dalmation haven't and maybe he won't.

I've got a 4' fence, and my GSP has not ever jumped it.
Though true story, the other day I was messing around and sitting in the bed of my pickup truck. From a stand still she jumped into the bed from the side (near the rear wheel) I about crapped my pants.
Anyhow I've let her out at night and she's seen rabbits on the other side of the fence. She goes bazerk too, but has not jumped the fence. If she ever does figure it out though I'm sure we would have to come up with a better solution.
BTW, I've let the gate open on accident and they don't run away. Look out front and they are playing in the yard. I live in a culdasac so no harm will come from cars. My dogs don't run off.

Thats good to hear yours wont jump the fence or run off. I hope my V does the same. What have you done to help this or did it just come natural?? I hope my V will follow my dal and just guard the fence line. Hes never jumped it, actually never tried that ive seen. If a squirrl is out front he'll just bark and follow it across the fence. They are usually in the yard though, sometimes I catch him under the picnic table or hiding on the prowl. Hes got his share of squirrls and rabbits. He'll chase them still but he hasnt got one in a while. I can tell he gets annoyed, he'll chase it up a tree and it will just sit and "laugh" at him.
The only thing I've done is let them out of the fence with me off leash. This may or maynot be possible in your area if you have a busy street nearby. Since I'm in the back of the subdivision it would take the dog a while to go near the street.fdsjr wrote:Thats good to hear yours wont jump the fence or run off. I hope my V does the same. Secondly when they are out of the fence, they will chase stuff like a cat(especially a cat) or rabbit or something.
So this is not 100%, but like I said I'm in the country not much chance of the dogs getting hurt.

Once my dog listens well... I was planning on having him off the leash now and then. I take runs though my neighborhood and wouldnt mind having him with me. The route I take is always a little ways away from the busy roads. Ive seen other dogs in the neighborhood off the leash and think id be alright doing it.
I run bailey my setter off a leash all the time. The trick is to have constant control of the dog. I can turn her off a cat too when she sees one. It is fun to have your dog running with you on paths and she goes on point right when people are infront of you. U want to see your dog make you look good thats when.
