E fence/ E collar

Post by Mountain Mint » Wed May 18, 2005 8:13 am

We were planning on installing an underground fence for our new Griffon. We are first time dog owners and have heard the E fence may not be a good option. It may cause the dog to 'shut down' or get very confused if we plan to use an e collar.

We have two acres and can't afford the $7,000-$8,000 it would cost to install a wooden fence.

We really only want the best for our pup and need some advise. We currently take him out on a lead every time he needs to go out.

Thanks for all your help on the matter.

I've had the e-fence on my first dog, cow. He was a soft dog, but he still discovered he could run though... I wouldn't go back. Now I've got the setup here:

They are fine with a small area for the day as long as you let them run in the evening. I once thought that the dogs needed a huge place to run all day, but in reality, if you stay home and watch them. They sleep (sun bake) a good portion of the day.

I've also heard that the e-fence causes trouble later in training too...

we use an underground fence with our dogs. they learned that going certain places in our yard resulted in a shock. BUT just like using an e collar to reinforce a learned command, you have to train them NOT to go outside the boundaries (in your case you would use the little white flags that come with the fence) before just letting them out the back door. of course, it is important to make SURE that the dog understands what he is being shocked for though before you(the fence) punish him. some dogs take longer to train than others, but there is a video that comes with the kit. (and there are also companies that will come install the fence and train your dog to use the flags as a fence if you would rather go that route). eventually you can remove the flags if you want and the dog should know where the boundaries are. that should eliminate confusion.

I have a GSP who will turn a year old the end of this month. I installed an Innotek 2100 underground fence last November. It's been great. I followed all of the instructions on training him and he respects it. He is not a soft dog at all. He has only run through it a couple of times but he got nailed doing it. He hasn't done that in a while.

Don't the newer underground fences have "run thru" protection? I mean I'm sure a dog could make it any way, but seems like I was reading that if the dog is moving toward the line very quickly the correction will start earlier and be harsher in an attempt to stop them.

I was wonderimg though, if those of you who use it had to use the "stubborn dog" collar or was the standard enough?

I am not a efence fan because they do not protect the dog from issues ENTERING the containment area. They also can let the dog out as many people will admit (any one of these could be fatal). Until recently I would have accepted the information folks were posting on various boards about no issues as a result of the efence in regards to field work until I read this post:

More food for thought. :( Bill

Mine has the "run-through" protection

Mountain Dogs --

My Innotek 2100 has the run-through protection and I have the standard rechargeable collar. As far as my personal experience with my fence goes I'm very happy I did it and very happy with the results I've gotten. Of course they aren't for everyone or every situation. However, if you can't afford a real fence (like me) because it will cost a few grand to do the same area that I spent 200 bucks on with the invisible fence then I suggest looking into them as an option.

I might add that I live at the end of a dead end run that doesn't see much traffice and no through traffic. I also have a big field and woods next to my house. Now if I lived on a busy road then I probably wouldn't have resorted to using this invisible fence.

look down at wildroses' post on the thread. it makes alot of sense. both our dogs were collar conditioned BEFORE we put in a fence. so.... now i don't know what to tell you besides ask a pro trainer :) good luck!!!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. We have decided to wait and look into getting a wood or chain link fence installed for part of our yard because the whole two acres is very expensive.
