Foxy Toy - VGP training

Post by honeyrun » Fri Mar 25, 2005 6:42 am

How many others on this board actually train for versatile tests. I mean the ones where other than feather game is used?

In getting Retta ready for her VGP this fall, I made a new retrieving dummy for her. It's made from a fox hide with 4 lbs of weight in either end and rolled socks in the middle for her to grip. She has to be able to handle this weight and be able to jump over a 36" obstacle without dropping it.

The very first time she went to "fetch it", when she picked it up her a$$ end came off the ground ( she weighs in at 50 lbs ). The look on her face was priceless and it gave me a really good laugh. She is getting used to the weight and is retrieving and holding it nicely now.

Now that Retta finished her Senior Hunter Title last weekend (we are going to try a master test next week), I am going to start adding the blood tracking work. Soon we will also be able to get back to doing duck seaches in prep for her Utility test this fall also.

Cindy,
I have a young DK that I will be testing, but that won't be for awhile as he's only 3.5 months. For now he's just having fun finding pigeons and tracking rabbits.

good luck on the VGP

Cindy:

I use an Oberlander for weight training. Basically it is a leather device to mimic a fox. I will get some photos and post for you. Basically is has furr around the middle and two pockets on each side that you can add weight. I use 1 lb lead ingots as my weight.

I got a pair of 10lb ankle weights and took the 1lb packs out and put them in the fox hide. Works great. Now I have to get her jumping with it.
