New puppy and older dog

Cripes, I'm reading some really scary stuff coming out here.

The one about roll the dog over and have the other dog stand over it - bad advice and based on an idea that has long been refuted, certainly when it comes to humans instigating this.

Shocking the dog when it growls at pup - it may work but then again maybe the dog will just become more aggressive toward the pup that it perceives is "attacking" it back when it should be submissive.

Hitting a dog with a 4x2 plank, I suppose if you want to kill or seriously injure the old Daly that should about do it.

None of us really know what the interaction is between the puppy and the Dalmation.
I suggest an email to Dr Bailey; edbailey@uoguelph.ca
is called for. He answers problems on dog behaviour
for GunDog Magazine. It won't cost you anything, and he will ask the right questions.

Alright ive been researching this and came across something I need some convincing about. The book Puppies for Dummies stated that when 2 dogs fight that live in the same household. Break up the fight and praise the alpha dog. But what if the fight was just provoked by the pup say, wanting to play?? Will it make the Dal wanna attack him more?? Im having a hard time with this one, what do you think?

Go right ahead and stick your hand into a dog fight you are liable to get bit your self :violent1: it happened on one of my job sites, lady tried breaking up a fight her dog started and got bit by her own dog. just save yourself the trouble and keep them seperate.

That book was probably refering to older dogs not a puppy and an older dog. Also there shouldnt be an alfa dog you are alfa no ifs ands or buts

I have a feeling that if you have a Dal that has problems with your V pup, then the Dal has problems with other Dogs as well. The Dal has a general socialization problem.
Margaret; nobody is advocationg hitting dogs with 2 x 4s, I think that was quite clear. :? I posted a clarification just to make sure there was no misunderstanding. I am sorry if I am taking this too personaly but this is the reason I posted a clarification. :(
Fdsjr I think you need to work with the Dal to socialize him. There are others here that can help with an adult more than I can but to blame the V pup, a baby dog, is not what I would do. Good luck and let use know what worked.

Your right Richard!

It was an AKC video you mentioned where they whacked fighting
dogs with a 2" x 2" NOT a 2" x 4"

Might work but with some breeds/dogs makes 'em worse.
Sounds a scary video, but maybe need to watch it for context that's put in.

:)
