One will and one won't
One will and one won't
Hello everyone. Found this forum about a week ago. From what i have read sounds like a great bunch and this is where i need to be. Someone said you people on here are jumping up and down for someone to ask for help training their dogs. I'm asking. I have a GSP and a GWP and need some help. Got a late start with these pups. They are 9 months old. The GWP points everything and the GSP will not point anything. I have not worked these dogs on live birds other than song birds we find in the field. I used a bird wing and the GWP locks up but the GSP chases until his tongue is hanging out. I bought a quail harness and can get quail for training. Has anyone used one of these or should i go another route. Do you think i have waited to late for the GSP or maybe he will come around? I have had labs before but this is first pointing dogs. What should be my next step with both dogs? Thanks

You haven't waited too late. Its never too late =)...
Your GSP is simply the better hunting dog and doen't care to point wings on strings and song birds! =)
On a serious note. If your interested in training the dogs yourself, get with folks who train, and learn, learn, learn..... Videos are good also. Or, you can get a pro trainer to do the job... Here is my unfinished, less than perfect starter article:

Like I said, its never too late to start, but reguardless of the dogs age you'll need to start from the begining....

First were are you from I missed that part.....
Grant is right you are not to late....
First go find that quail harness and give it a toss! My Op! Get some reading material or video's, Find a good sourse of pigions or game birds, check cord, pinch or choke collar(as grant stated). And biggest of all, TIME! 9 months is not even close to a late start!
I would start by geting the dogs on some stakeouts or chain gang.
As far as the wing on a string thing some dogs do it some don't. I am not a big fan of it. Sure for a little pup to play and take a photo or two is great....
With the CC you need to do some basic yard trianing with them. Teach them Here/Come/heel/whoa. As the dogs respond to your commands take it to the field and do the same. I also like to mix up each place that I train at.
Keep the time training short and simple. I like to start out with a 20-30 min session once a day and move that to twice a day.
Take your time with each of them.... Remember that each of the dogs are different and one may take to the training easy and the other not. You have to read the two appart.

.......thanks guys for the fast replies. I only got replies from GSP owners. I hope you didn't think that was a put down cause the GSP wouldn't point a song bird. I love that dog and if i can get him to slow down long enough to point i think he will be great. I don't think i need to build on his desire any. He goes hard and at a fast pace. His Dad is a Field Trial dog out of Oklahoma. I just want a hunting dog. Grant I read your starter article and it was great. Even I could understand it. Tak I am from Louisiana and have retired in Arkansas. Lots of turkey and river smallies here. Out scounting for turkey i kept jumping quail here and there in the cut overs in the national forest so now i have pointing dogs. Something i always wanted to do but in Louisiana there really is no public land where you can hunt quail. Oh you kind of lost me with the stakeouts or chain gang. Thanks for the help
