In hunt tests when everything goes right, it's pretty easy. The problem is that something odd always happens. It's how you and the dog handle the odd stuff that makes for a Q or a DQ.

I walked the Jr hunt course but Rush decided to let me while he run the field and several hundred yards on either side. For the first time he decided to ignore my presence. Did have a beautiful point though.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Hey Ward,
You know, you and the dog can be ready for SH and crap just happens. Mostly crap having to do with pen-raised birds.
Just hang in there. I failed JH more than any person alive but also learned about every mistake that could be made in the process.
To paraphrase an old saw "That's why they call it hunt testing and not ribbon collecting".
Best regards,

Hey Ward, in one of my training books, I read a story about the guy's GSP, in his first trial, attacking the judge's horse. The guy was a great story-teller. He had me paralyzed, I was laughing so hard at the visual.
There are good red dogs out there. They're just harder to find than good GSPs.
My V boy and I ran in our first NSTRA trial yesterday. On A field, we ran against a near champion and broke even 3/3. On B field, we ran against a near 2 x CH that won the Alabama region and went down 3/2 and it was almost the other direction by no more than a gnat-hair.
So, I feel OK about the V boy. I am just biding my time, however, till next year when I can run Gunner-man. That'll be interesting!

Greg,
Sounds like you had a good couple of runs in the NSTRA trials! Splitting the field always has to make you a bit happy. I hate to give the trial up with a dog I run with.
I have a couple of my pups I sold starting to run in a few trials in Alabama. Have not seen any placements posted out of them yet.

Hi Grant, grant wrote:Can you give a few quick tips on JH?Greg Jennings wrote:I failed JH more than any person alive but also learned about every mistake that could be made in the process.
Here is the short story:
Find one bird, Kage holds point long enough for the judge to see it, the bird flushes, you pop the blank pistol and Kage gets a pretty orange ribbon.
----
Here is a bit longer story:
There will be plent of birds there. Take him up and down the rows of sage grass and/or corn. If you don't find anything, take him along the edge of the woods.
Try to keep up with Kage. When you see him point, say "Point" in a loud voice. If you have a hat on, wave it to get the judge's attention. Whether you flush the bird, Kage breaks and flushes it, or the bird just flushes, shoot your blank pistol. If the pistol malfunctions, just yell "Bang!".
While you're guiding him around, try not to give many commands. It's just an opportunity to cut your score.
When the judge says "Time" or tells you to pick up Kage (they might do that if both dogs have done enough to qualify), make that first recall command work. It's another chance to lower your score.
Feel free to call me if you want to talk through it.

Ya that is right. Last I talked with Chris he was just about to start entering some trials. He has 2 females they are 2 as of Sept 2004.snips wrote:I know both the dogs he was braced with (I think the pointer of Glens was the one Rick trained) and they are real nice dogs. You DID have your hands full. Tak, who has your pups down here? Was it Chris Johnson? Are they running age yet?
After a disasterious Saturday had a terrific run in the Jr. Hunter test on Sunday. Two finds, two points, but had to chase too far. Think it is time to start working on stead. I hate the pen raised quail that fly low and slow and eventually get caught if the pups keep working at it. Undoes everything you work on all week. GSP club has a test coming up on April 2 and 3rd. Would be nice to finish so i can consentrate on the senior test.

Running in Jr`s is really detremental if you are in the process of steadying your dog. I like it for socialization in younger dogs, helps bold them up and gets them around people, horses, and birds. Does`nt get better than that. I have also run them in Jr`s after the steadying process and just flushed the birds they point and shoot the blank. It is a good start for Sr or MH. But if the dog is "in between" on their training it can definetly undo everything.....

One other thing. you have to be in gun range if your dog flushs the bird. So if your at one end and your dog is at the other end of the field and the dog goes on point the flushs the bird. you well not pass. Thats where trainablity comes in. Don't let some people fool you and tell you that when the judges calls time you are no longer under judgement. you are till you leave the field.
