Stakeout chain

Post by James Johnson » Fri Mar 09, 2007 10:28 am

Okay some of you may have read my post on Healing help.
I have just read an article that was suggeste on whats a command lead.
This article starts out by saying that step 1 is the stakeout chain.

I have never done this with Scout. Do I need to start with a stakeout chain before going to heal work?

Also does anybody have any suggestions on doing this.
Thanks in advance.

I am assuming you know what a stakeout chain is. I use about a 60' chain with droppers every 10' maybe 3' long for each dog. I have big rings at each end that I hammer an old car axle through.

The purpose is to disassociate the pressure on the neck and restraint with you. Some dogs will put up a fit the first time they're restrained. You don't want that associated with you. If there's more than one dog on there the bouncing will be associated with the other dogs and not with you.

I start them on the chain real young, and put them all out there while I clean runs. They need to be used to the chain while they're waiting at a trial.

Here's a pic of another exercise. I stake out young dogs and turn my trial horses loose in the yard so the dogs get perfectly accustomed to horses.

I had a rich client year's ago that told me a man couldn't have to many dog's or horse's and if he had enough money he could have all the dog's and horse's he want's!

The stake out chain or chain gang initially teaches the dog to give to pressure. This teaches pup more than I am going to write.

But since you are ambitious anough to learn I think it would be in your best intrest to pick up this book "Best Way To Train your Gun Dog" The Delmar Smith Method by Bill Tarrant

Rick And Ronnie Smith has a puppy developement video that is a pretty good resource
