Evasive training the pup

Post by crittercontrol » Sat Feb 17, 2007 8:39 pm

I've always found it a good idea to challenge your dog. Keeps 'em motivated and sharp.

Decided to throw Jonesy a fast one today and try some new stuff.

The first couple of birds were pointed and nothing new was added. Still gotta work on the flagging thing...but I think it might be an invention of boredom/repetition. Otherwise all went well.

Then the next bird was placed in the open, wings locked. She came around the corner, saw the bird, and halted like a champ. Passed test number one.

Then for some retrieving. I held Jonesy and threw a bird over a Phrag/cattail slough while my buddy shot it; the bird landed in that god aweful mess...just what I wanted. Made Jonesy mark the bird...then in for the retrieve. After searching for about 5-8 minutes to no avail I tossed in a dead bird. well ya can't pull one over on a Gordon....she spit out the thrown bird and went back to searching for the shot bird!

Unfortunately in the end, she couldn't find the shot bird. Maybe too much too soon...either way, failed test number two. (although she did bring back the thrown bird eventually.)

Then off for some water training. Simple and she handled it like a lab....well pretty much. Passed test number three.

Who says a setter can't do a water retrieve?

Enough dog training for one day, but...

When we got back to the farm we threw a few of these...I'm not telling if I passed the test though... :goony:

Sounds like you're having a great time with your little girl!! She is a cutie for sure!!

Flagging is normally a problem of too much pressure, trying to do too much too soon. Birddogs shouldn't get bored with birds...they live for 'em!! Sounds like she's got oodles of natural talent and probably doesn't need alot of man made drills or tests to get it out of her. I'd stick to letting the Uintah ptarmigan, Wasatch ruffed/blues, west desert chukars, and Box Elder county hungarians/sharpies do the teaching and testing for ya'.

It's so easy with just one dog to overdo it....you just can't go too slow in order to leave your fingerprints off 'em if that makes sense. We've been trying to "counsel" our enthusiastic first time puppy owners of that concept so we don't find 'em on forums wondering why the dog is laying down on point, ticking, flagging, etc.

Great pics and what a cute little girl you've got!!

Yah, that sounds good. I know Sharptailhunter went out yesterday and found a motherload of 'em at Sharparitaville...plus one porcupine.
