Not your Usual Set up For a competition
Not your Usual Set up For a competition
Been a busy week, just back from the 'National Gun Dog Team Event' in North Yorkshire
''Gundogguy'' You would love this one
A two day event open to any Gun Dog breed, teams are selected from Gun Dog training groups around the UK.
Here is just one of the tasks during the two days:
'This lot had 20 minutes of shots being fired and game tossed and Live pigeons flying towards them ,with a beating line of spaniels and handlers moving towards all that game on the ground with a head wind and hundreds of spectators just 10 metres behind them and clay pigeon shooting in the background . ...Much like a shoot day really ..all Non Slip .
If the dog made the slightest movement or noise It was eliminated. Each dog in turn was sent for a retrieve, any change of game /shopping was also an elimination. and any drop or fumble of the game other than 'deliver tenderly to hand' was an elimination. btw, Once the handler had completed his/her retrieve they were not finished ! They had to remain non slip with the same standard while the others performed . Not sure if it was any advantage to go first or last .
The 'spaniel group' beating line during this wait ,while 21 retrievers performed and had to remain in the 'hup' sit without movement or they would be eliminated.
They were then asked to hunt under control to 'sweep' that area and collect game from the deck by a find and deliver to hand.

How many succeeded at the drill, before the final sweeping? Could you talk quietly to your dog, or did you have to remain silent?
Re: Not your Usual Set up For a competition
No talking ,No touching. 25 of the 32 dogs completed the task.nikegundog wrote:How many succeeded at the drill, before the final sweeping? Could you talk quietly to your dog, or did you have to remain silent?

Polmaise, I know of this event. Have read and spoke with various contacts, sounds like great fun. How does the selection process work? Obviously there would be lot of pride in being selected from the various locales, England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Do the Retriever breeds dominate the program? Or is it a distribution of retrievers and spaniels? Dog work at very high standards, of course.

A Spaniel won 'Top Dog' last year and a Retriever this year.gundogguy wrote:Polmaise, I know of this event. Have read and spoke with various contacts, sounds like great fun.
