Public hunting land in TX for training?
Are you allowed to take a bird dog to train on public hunting lands in TX? Does anybody do this? My dog has his NA test and a JH test coming up so I'm wanting to make sure he's prepared, but he's only been training at one place and I think getting him to at least one other place would be best. But unfortunately I'm scrambling to find places.

I have done training on the LBJ national grasslands west of Fort Worth. Does Texas offer a walk on access permit for hunting? Seems like TPW called it Type 2 land.

yes they offer a permit. It is $48, only $12 if you arent going to hunt.

A conversation with a game warden confirmed that you can't release birds on WMAs (Wildlife Mgmt Areas) for training. I spoke with an Army Corps of Engineer Park Ranger and he told me I could plant dead birds, but they had to he dead before I arrived on site, and shooting blanks was okay as long as I informed someone onsite that I'd be working a dog in the area.
My suggestion would be to contact NAVHDA, NSTRA, AKC Breed clubs and ask them about the "Private Bird Hunting Areas" (handled through the Parks & Wildlife Dept) and/or leases where they train or run trials.

A dog on point.....steady, yet trembling,
Breathing in and tasting the gentle breeze.
Take a moment for yourself to soak it all in,
All the training, the hard work.....it really has paid off.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm already training with an AKC breed club and will be going to my first NAVHDA training day this weekend. But I was hoping to find one more spot

I would suggest looking it up, print it out and have it with you as many Wardens wont know the difference between the training laws and poaching.
I train on Davy Crockett and others year round with pen raised birds that are banded before release and I haven't had any problems. You do need that $48 permit and I always keep my hunting permit up to date also.

I don't know any areas around Cypress other than just asking any landowners if they would let you train .(which is hard to find)CamperioWB wrote:Thanks for the responses guys. Which AKC and NAVHDA groups are you training with?
