Coming along nicely!

Post by Vizsla Vince » Sun Jan 07, 2007 8:16 pm

Just a fill-in on Zoomie's progress.

Zoomie will turn 13 months in a week. I've been training him at a private club on "canned" pheasants since November & his learning curve simply astounds me!
Last weekend, on New Year's Day, I had Zoomie out with my son & his buddie. We were going along a hedgerow, where I knew a bird to be in the area. I was just watching Zoomie run along the row, when he stopped on a dime, turned 90 degrees, & locked up! I tell him "whoa, & he waits until I catch up. I can't see the bird, & suspect he's a runner. I say "go ahead", & Zoomie creeps in until I say "whoa" again. He ends up breaking & flushing the bird, & I let it go. Later on, we lose Zoomie in some tall grass, & I call him, no response. I call him again & nick him, no response. So we start working the grass. My son stumbles on the dog & the bird that he had locked up on. The bird flies up in my son's face, & that one got away! I would have loved to knock that one down for the dog, but, oh well  The day ended with Zoomie finding & pointing all his birds.

Yesterday, Zoomie & I are roaming around a forest preserve, strictly for exercise. We happen upon a shallow pond filled with ducks & geese. Zoomie locks up about 50 yards out. Two ducks fly off & I call out "whoa". The rest of the birds take off, & Zoomie stays put! Finally, I say "okay" & Zoomie takes off after the birds!

I couldn't be more pleased! This dog has taught himself (& me) so much in the last two months, it's incredible!

Hopefully, next season, we can meet some wild birds!

You scare me when you say you nicked him with the collar when you didn't know where he was or what he was doing. I just will not use a collar in the field unless I can see the dog and know what he is doing. What happens if after nicking him while he is pointing he figures out that he shouldn't be doing that and quits pointing?

I just won't take that chance.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Never, never, never hit a dog with a collar when you don't know where he is and what he's doing. You'll shorten his learning curve in a hurry. If you can't see him, don't nick him.

Does your collar have a "Page" function? Better to page them, if you can't see them and don't know where they are. Otherwise.....OOOOPS! Be careful using your collar, as Ezzy said, he could learn to stop pointing as quick as he learned to point.

Ouch, ooch, ouch! okay, okay! Morale has improved! Can the beatings stop, now?

Seriously, thanks for the advice, guys. If it's any consolation, Zoomie continues to point & hold, so he may be smarter than I am dumb!

Did you call the dog before you nicked him?

Just curious. I know with my dog when we were learning the "here" command she would disappear and because she was out of sight thought we could not enforce the command. That soon changed. The command was given and the nicks were to remind her of compliance. I am positive she wa snot pointing birds while she was gone.

But, like folks say....be careful with that thing. You can ruin a dog in a hurry.
We have done something with nothing for so long we are now qualified to do everything with anything....

i can, but I'm woefully inept @ posting them
I can't even get my avatar figured out!

And to answer Buckeye, I did call him several times, but I didn't think we were close enough to my planted bird for him to be on point. Incidentally, the bird had moved farther than I had anticipated...more of that learning curve business
