11 weeks old - first time on the birds - lots o' pics
I got a little impatient and picked up a few pigeons yesterday, even before I had a loft to put them in. I've got two that get along together in a Havahart trap and the third, and feisty, one in a large box. I'll be building a loft this week. Anyway, Maggie is 11 weeks old today and I wanted to see how she did with live birds. Just a nice simple hour in the fields behind the neighborhood. No pressure, just letting the pup stretch her legs a bit. This is her second day in these fields, but first with any birds to chase.
The first thing I noticed about Maggie when I got her at 8 weeks, is how infatuated she was with Bull Thistle or any plant with lumpy burrs at the top of it. She'd run from plant to plant. She had a couple bird contacts before these next three pictures, but even at 11 weeks, you can see she still likes those burrs. Here's a picture of her going full throttle...and stops on a dime because of a thistle to check out. The plant she looks like she's getting ready to run past in the first picture is the same plant she's checking out in the second picture.
More burrs. I don't recall her caring too much about burrs at the end of the day though.
I'm not sure if she's looking in the ditch or just to the other side.
No matter, she wants the water anyway.
I love watching her run.
I know I'm biased, but I really think Maggie is a cutie pie.
I can't believe how confident she is. She's not afraid to escape my watchful eye. I don't mind, and I don't say a thing to her. I just smile, thinking about this Fall & Winter.
Then she realizes I'm not around, and like a bullet, she's back to me.
Her third time on the bird this afternoon and she charges right in.
Obviously a little too much charge.
Hey look, mud!!
Big bushes? Don't worry Roy (do dogs know you by your first name?), I'm not scared.
Man, this little girl has got my heart.
Maggie is a quick learner, the next bird contact and she holds tight. She held this point for over a minute.
Same point, I just worked my way around. She wants this bird SO bad.
She can't stand it any longer.
Whoops, a little too close.
Where did that pigeon go?
Oh, here it is, at the top of the tree. Thank goodness just a 2" quakie. Easy to pull down to retrieve the bird.
Another long point.
She repositions herself. I don't care at this point, I mean, she's only 11 weeks old.
She busts the bird, but ran it down to point it again.
All in all, I think this was a positive 60 minutes. Like I said, no pressure, no talking, just chasing birds and exploring the bushes. Ok, I did pet her all over a couple of times when she came running back to me.

I took over 200 on this outing. I was hoping I'd get a few that were keepers.WillieELk78GSP wrote:That is awesome, I wish I had that many pictures of my dog on her first birds!!!

Man I love you pictures and find it funny about the thistle my britt does the same thing he jumps to eat them like he doesn't feel anything. Keep up the good work and post more pics.
I will take the dog and not the gun but never the gun without the dog !

What a great looking pup you have. Have fun with her!
Re: 11 weeks old - first time on the birds - lots o' pics
Great pup!
But please go easy, most that point that young decide at a year +, it might be fun to catch one.
Be very proud, but don't be upset and apply pressure if she backslides a bit.
However, I had a Britt that never knocked a bird, so good luck.
She is a nice one, lots of style.
