To Old?
To Old?
At what age is it to late to train your dog? I have an almost 2 year old female that I got as a pup with the intentions of training her. Life got busy and I am at a place now where I have more time. Before I start working up to get her in the field, is it to late to make a good bird dog out of her?
Re: To Old?
i dont think its ever too late. I mean if the dog is close to death and cant walk then your out of luck there but at 2 years old she still has the mental capability of learning new things. As long as she has a hunting bloodline, its going to be wired in her since birth. teaching her to hunt will be easy, teaching her not to hunt now thats going to be hard.

I assume just start with the basics??

Re: To Old?
does she come from a hunting background? i would start of with just the basic commands like here, heel fetch etc and then introducing her to birds. like show her a pigeon, let her smell it and let the pigeon go she should chase after it then from there plant a couple and see what she does. just go slow and take your time.
Re: To Old?
Yes she has a hunting back ground, father came from windswept in Missouri if I’m not mistaken.
Both parents were bird dogs, but the breeder was more of a duck hunter so they did more retrieving.
she is good on her here command but I need to reinforce it

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Your welcome i think that you will be surprised at how fast they will pick it up even at a older age. I know that I sure was and I got the dog at 3. And we haven't even been together very long.

I got a rescue lab/shepard mix at age 7 and although he was never much of a hunting dog he learned a ton of obedience commands without much work.
