I've trained my dog and my brother-in-law's dog, and I help train a bunch of others (gun, plant birds, etc)... but have never been paid for it.
I've heard that if you've ever been paid, then you lose your amateur status and can never run a dog for an AFC title. What's the truth to that?

Ayres, you are a good guy to help train others' dogs. I try to get my brothers to send me theirs, but they never get around to it. Have trained or helped trained many others though, just about every sporting breed except not springers for some reason. Never took money for it.
The answers to your questions about amateur status are: yes. no.
Once you have been paid to train a dog, you lose amateur status and you cannot run a dog in the amateur stakes. It would not be accurate though that you could never finish a dog as an AFC. It is possible to regain amateur status, there is a rule on it, I have never been through it so don't remember the requirements or the waiting period. It is long though, a year or two.

I should clarify.. I've been paid in experience and free use of facilities and resources, but, still, no cash.Wagonmaster wrote:Ayres, you are a good guy to help train others' dogs.
As for my brother-in-law's dog.. that really was/is a freebie because he wants to hunt his dog with mine and I won't do it until his dog is trained to a level I approve of.
