Meeting neigbors while training

Post by Casper » Thu Jun 15, 2006 10:55 pm

I was able to meet up with a member of the forum to get together to do a bit of training. I invited him to come to my training place since my homers are not flying very far yet. He (NVgsp) brought along some wild pigeons he had traped and had planned on carding them.

Lesson #1: If you plan on using carded birds best leave suberbia

The first attempt to put out a bird failed as the bird decided to fly on top of the fire house I train next to.
The second attempt worked and we were able to work that bird a couple times. We left it out to work another dog on it and while we were disscussing our objective a lady came by on a bike asking if we were using pigeons. I told her we were and she responded that there was a pigeon dangling from the power line next to her house  At the moment I didnot know what to tell her and had no idea of what I could do to free the bird. I offered to dispatch the bird but she didnt take to kindly to that and left :?

After we worked a couple more dogs and were picking up she came back by and took a picture of NVgsp's license plate after she had already contacted the sheriffs department, animal control, and the power company  We tryed to reason wiht her but she was not interested in discussing the situation. I had to bite my tounge as I started to get very angry with her riding off.

We waited around till we seen the power company truck drive by and stoped him to discuss the situation on their end to find out if there was going ot be any charges for the call. Thankfully there wasnt. We opted to wait around a bit longer to see if the cops would show up adn about the time we planned on departing one did.

He explained all is well adn we did nothing wrong other than choosing the wrong place to train with carded birds

Lesson #2: Things dont always go as planned so plan for the worst and hope for the best

I suppose I wont ever expect a home made pie from this neigbor

OHHHH and make sure you get on the good side of the law and offer to help out the officer train his dog

Some lessons are learned the hard way

That's a total bummer. It's amazing how we have to cautious of where we train now because of the impact it may have on "some" people. I am in the same situation in suburban Columbus. I have to be careful of where and how I train for that very reason.

Good luck in the future!

Aside from the "neighbor" issues, that is the problem with carded or "hosed" birds. Gotta find a place to train with no trees or power lines, or you will leave them hanging all over the place. Which is kind of embarrassing and frustrating, even if you don't run into one of the "antis."

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Suburban training can be strange.

I friend of mine was in the process of whoa-breaking his dog with a rope over a tree limb. Of course some do-gooder had to call the police due to "animal cruelty". When the police arrived my buddy and the officer ended up having a great dog training conversation as the office too had a young dog he was training.

I went into town to work some retrieving drills with a friend using bumpers. When I started firing my blank gun my friend nearly had a stroke!! "you cant shoot that here, someone will think it's a real gun going off".

Now I know why I moved out into a semi rural setting!!

That too.

I tried it (pigeons and other birds with hoses attached) years ago, when we lived in town. I hated it. Just a mess. Among other things, it was even more artificial than planted quail or chukar, and the dogs knew it. But if you live in town and don't have access to a piece of land to train on, something is better than nothing.

You can clip their wings so they don't take off. Just so I know explain why they have to be tied up for me please.

You do it when you want to be able to have the bird fly away on the flush, for the dog's sake, but you want to be able to recover the bird and use it again. So if you tie a short length of hose to the legs, or card the bird, it will fly a ways on the flush, but not be able to make a full escape. You go net it, and use it again.

I found, if you were going to use the hose trick, that you had to also pull some flight feathers, because pigeons are such strong flyers they would get away with quite a bit of hose attached.

yup...what a rodeo! i am curious to see if she was able to track down the address or phone number regarding my license plate?!?!?! since it was a company car, might have to tell the big boss man before hand.

obviously it was not our intention to have the birds fly off as they had. i have been using carded pigeons with great success, but i have also been using them on BLM land, pretty much quail and chukar country...not too many trees and power lines

Casper:
Just hope that i didnt ruin your training grounds for you over this matter. i guess, just have the cop out with his dog and i'm sure that nut job will leave you alone...but i have been wrong before. worst case scenario, just make a run up here and then you will be able to let your dogs run big and we wont have anyone else bother us!! 8) Just let me know. thanks again for lettin me come out there.

This is funny! Good to get all the blunders worked out all at once! Look at it this way can't have much more go wrong!

Continue to watch your back, Casper. When you didn't get in trouble by the officer I'm sure the neighbor was angry. Tattle-tales are never happy until they see what they perceive to be justice.

You can try to make amends (make dinner for her - tell her it's chicken ) if you want, but always look out for her now that you know what kind of person she really is (one that would immediately poke her nose into someone else's business and call the authorities rather than talk reasonably with someone).

yeah, i have been waiting for a phone call saying: "that lady was out picketing out infront of my truck while i worked the dogs! with signs that read "cruelty to animals" or "shouldnt own dogs!" havent yet, so hopefully all is well.

oh and Casper: havent heard anything from the local police about my license plate, knock on wood, hopefully she has dropped her nosie ways and stuck to her own business.
