I have been tracking with my Rotti (practicing for my pup T-2 weeks and counting now) but at any rate you will need:
tracking line - at least 20 ft. long as AKC rules say you must be 20 ft.
behind the dog - make it longer and knot it at 20 ft
some flags - like 25 or so - I made some with heavy wire and
surveyor's tape but LCS sells some ready made ones
non restrictive harness - that the dog CAN'T pull against easily (no
chest straps) this was a problem for me - I have one I made out of
rope that is working ok
things to find - AKC uses gloves normally I guess but practice with
some other stuff too.
notebook - you will want to get in the habit of marking down your
tracks with landmarks etc. so when you start getting to long tracks you can assist the dog if they wander.
PRACTICE laying tracks before starting with your dog. Good luck
