New pointer

Post by wes70 » Mon May 22, 2006 2:48 pm

I just got a 9 week old english pointer. What do I need to start doing to get her started? What do I start training her on? Thanks in advance for the help.

At 9 weeks you let her be a puppy. You let her goof around and play. You start potty training and crate training. Dont start her on birds yet. Wait until she is 3 or 4 months old. Then just start running her on wild birds. Thats what I did to start my puppy.

Good Luck and Congradulations on the puppy.

I agree with Ryan just enjoy the puppy breath. But now is a good time to introduce her to gun fire. I start wit a cap pistol at a distance then work up to a blank pistol then a 410. Good luck

I wouldnt do that until later contact with birds. I know some people have done it with feeding but noone wants to fire a gun in their house. Wait until the pup has been on birds a while before you start to introduce gun fire. But as gundogguru said just start with a cap gun.

Thanks, I hope i have a lot of fun with her. On the potty training issue. How sould I do that. I have been told several different ways. My other house dogs I rub their nose in it, spank them and put them out side. I was told you do not do that with a pointer. Then I had some one tell me it is ok to do that.

I just do not want to break that trust between us already.

Thanks again,
Wes

I found the best way was to watch the dog. If he is sleeping and gets up put her out. After she eats put her out. After she drinks put her out. after a play put her out. You will have accidents but life goes on. when I first brought my puppy home every 15 or half hour he went outside and he didnt come back in until he went. I was lucky and had a cold spell when I brought him home so he didnt want to be outside very long.

Keep in mind that what ever you do negative now will become a problem later as pup gets older. Always set pup up to succeed and have fun :!: :!: :!:
