Tracking

Post by EastBeast » Wed May 03, 2006 7:05 pm

Hi! I am wondering if anyone has done much tracking with their dog? Not blood tracking but the find the glove variety? I want to do this with my new pup and was hoping for any input or feedback anyone would care to provide. Thanks!

I don't know if you call this tracking but here goes.....

I basically hide an object when I am out on walks, and then say "rosie find". She will run sniffing the group while her tail wags.

An object can be a ball, or anything really

Is that what you want to do?.

Yes. I was just curious if anyone else has tried it. I bought this book called "Try Tracking! The Puppy Tracking Primer" by Carolyn A. Krause and have been practicing technique with my old Rotti, who loves it! I want to work on it with my new pup too, it's quite a bit of fun. I am hoping maybe someone has done some AKC tracking stuff and was willing to share their take on it?

EastBeast:

I recommend you visit Ed Leerburg's web site http://www.leerburg.com/, there are over 10,000 printed pages of information on dog training on this site. Ed is the owner of Leerburg Kennel (breeds and trains working German shepherds) and has extensive knowledge concering teaching dogs to track. His web site has a number of tracking articles: http://www.leerburg.com/articles.htm#track

Ed also has training videos, DVDs, and books on tracking that he sells. I have purchased a number of items from Ed, he is great to deal with.

Good luck with your training.

Thanks Wild! I checked quite a bit of the sight out - pretty interesting. 5km run tracking regularly probably won't fit into my schedule but I'm gunna keep dabbling with what Mr. Leerburg terms "FST". Thanks again ! :)
