running,flushing, no pointing
running,flushing, no pointing
Hello everyone, I have a 6 month old GSP that I started introducing to birds at around 10 weeks. Since that time I have had him on planted pigeons and quail about 15 times and he still is not pointing. He is very birdy and runs full bore, catches scent and runs at it till it flys and then chases it across the country. I tried the wing on a string thing, just to see if he would point and he locks up solid on that. He is pretty good at his yard training, but totally loses it when he is out in the field. I don't want to keep planting birds ( winged money) for him if it is not doing any good. I don't have any access to wild birds. Any suggestions?

I have experienced similar behavior with young pointing dogs. It is my experience to forget about the cost of the birds used in training your future gun dogs. It is always best to conclude a days training on a good note even if you have birds still planted on the field. Try to develop a friendship with someone in your area who has birds available in a johnny house. I have found this the least expensive way to train a young dog while recalling the birds back at night.
