New house breaking problem

Post by shootist » Tue Mar 21, 2006 10:20 am

My pup is 4 months old. We are crate training him. We were using a carrier. He was doing great. He is now too large for the carrier we were using so I purchased a wire crate with divider. He uses the bathroom in the new crate. He didn't do that in his other crate. Any advice on how to fix this?

Just a thought... you could try putting a blanket or something around the cage to make it feel more like a den to him. kinda like his old crate. I hope you get it figured out.

Sounds like he doesn't think of this as "his den" anymore and that is a problem.

Try to feed him in there. Dog won't "go" where they eat.

We have the same problem. Rex had a small carrier that used to stay in out bedroom at night. He outgrow that and now he is in a Midwest Lift Stages wire kennel. He sleeps in teh kennel at night but doesn't go at night only during the day.

Is this a daytime issue or night time issue.
If at night have you limited the water intake after 8:00PM?
If day- time I'm sure it's because a pup can't hold it for 8 hours while you are gone at work.

Hope this helps

all the time. For example, I took him outside to use the bathroom before I went to run an errand. I came back an hour later to find he had peed in the crate. Its like he doesn't try at all to hold it.

They say a pup doesn't develope the muscle to control their bladder until about 5 months of age. Just try to keep reminding him that this is his den. Feed him in there, make him sleep in there and make sure you take him out every hour. If he doesn't go put him back in the crate for another hour. Be patient with it.

My beagle will still pee, every once and a while on the floor. Usually just when she gets excited though.

I just watched the Puppy Development DVD by Rick & Ronnie Smith last night and they mentioned feeding him in the crate, so he gets to know it's his den. It's good to hear about teh muscle control not until 5 months, but Rex holds it throughout the night, but doesn't during the day. But now he is beginning not to want to go into his Kennel at all! I'm going to try feeding him in there for a while.

He has done fine the last two days. I think you guys were right when it was said Cash didn't think of it as his den.
