Training in Georgia

Post by T2Georgia » Fri Jan 06, 2006 9:48 am

Hope everyone is having a wonderful start to 2006! I have a few quick questions........

1. Is hay and/or straw okay to use inside a dog house? Which is the preferrable bedding? I have been using cedar chips, but I think my GSP might be allergic to them (reddening on belly). Where can one purchase hay or straw bails?

2. I would like to get some birds (pigeons or quail) to use for training. Can one purchase birds for training? Does anyone know if they can be purchased in Georgia?

Thanks for your time and hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Regards,

Tommy :D

All of the places I know of are around N. GA. The Ad at the top of the page "Red Hill Quail Farm" is where I get mine...

You asked about hay or straw for beding. Hay is IMHO the better to use as it does not splinter like straw. You should be able to get hay at any local feed store.

Tommy,

You might also see if you can get a copy of "The Field". There are tons of ads for game birds in your area.

If you have trouble, drop me a line and I'll send you an old issue.

Fast response not guaranteed as I moved over Christmas and am still unpacking boxes.

Best,

pet stores now carry small bales of popple chips. the chips are very small and thin. i prefer them to hay or cedar. cedar is pretty strong smelling, maybe keeps the dogs smelling nice for you, but think of the dogs nose. have kept alot of dogs in hay, and it works fine, but every once in awhile have gotten hay that is loaded with fleas. the popple chips are clean and have very little odor.

I prefer straw over hay. Hay in my area is usually mixed and has timothy. It is more course than straw and more dusty, also has seeds mixed in.

Ok call me nuts but I had a gentlemen introduce me to this I dea and have had very good luck with it. Take it is for what it is worth.

I use shredded paper, I don't mean I take newspaper and shred it I mean like what you see in an office environment. The kind that is shredded in long strips. The cross cut stuff does not work well. Mine is shredded from computer print outs.

The long strip type puffs up real nice, it works well as insulation and I have found it works well in crates for puppies because it absorbes very well.

In my case I am alergic to both straw and hay so this solved the problem second, its "FREE" I get mine from a local company that has to pay to dispose of it. I get nice bedding for free and they save the disposal cost.

Good Luck,

Rob

I use Hay in the dog barrells due to convenience of having a hydro seeding company storing supplies in a nearby shed. It's nice to get home at 6:30p.m. at freezing temperatures & pick up a bale or two.

Birds???? I've heard of man they call Mr. Tommy in the Barnesville, Milner area. The locals prefer him.
I use M&M since thier in my county & thier scheduled health program is excellent especially if your using the birds in a johnny house.

Ask around about training leases in your area! These leases will have large tracts of land & training birds to work your dog.

There are some very nice people in the middle georgia area that enjoy bird hunting!

rschuster54303 - I use shredded paper also. Where I teach every teacher is required to shred unwanted used paper so when the custodial staff collects it each week they put in my truck for me to bring home. I was getting so much shredded paper in plastic garbage bags in my garage that I had my neighbor bring his baler over and we made some paper bales. I've got by stock pile!
