Worked Kage...

Post by grant » Mon Sep 26, 2005 8:03 am

I worked Kage this weekend. He did awesome! I put out 10 birds and he pointed all 10! Scenting conditions where bad I think because other dogs (pointers) training were running right over birds. My kid cleaned house! Out of the 10, I shot 8, and 2 didn’t fly but about 10 feet and he couldn’t resist catching them. We even had one water retrieve when a bird I shot landed in the pond. I wish I had some pics, but I don’t... I’ve been leaving Bell at home, so I can put more time into the “man” dog. I hope everyone else had a good weekend...

I went to a hunt test on Saturday morning and learned a lot from observation. I also took Justus so he had to be a dog for the day and, surprisingly, he seemed to have a great time. The trainer I rode with got out her 4/5 month old gsp, who loves to beat up on Justus, and he actually played back instead of getting annoyed and running under the truck. The tail was whippin back and forth and both dogs were play pouncing all over the place.

Best thing about it was that when I slapped the tailgate of the truck and said "load up" he actually jumped right in, no running start and no grief. (and this was into the back of a 4x4 diesel 2500 truck.. pretty high) I was surprised, but extatic at the same time. He usually puts his paws up and then wants me to lift him in when jumping into things that high up but on Saturday he was all dog.

Steven,

I know what you mean with getting the dog to load up. I have a truck with a pretty high tailgate. I couldn't get my pup to load up for the longest time. Then one day it just clicked and she was up with no problems. Now any time she sees the tailgate drop, she's climbing in. Actually, the other day I had her out front letting her stretch her legs before we took off and I had the truck backed into the driveway. She came tearing around the corner, must not have been looking and was half way up the hood of the truck before I grabbed her, luckily she didn't do any damage to the paint. I guess she was ready to go, gotta love the enthusiasm.
