I think if you want to teach it your dog must fist growl then each time he/she does it you say "growl". After some time you should be able to give the command and dog "should" growl.

I have heard this done with dogs that are barkers or they just want to teach a dog to "speak". With barkers every time dog barks they say speak. With repetion the dog learns to speak on command. They have also done this to teach "quiet". Tell dog to speak when he does they say quiet and dog learns only to bark on command.

This is just stuff I have read or heard about so nothing is going to say this will or wont work.

Do people make you worry enough to want this type of command?

Bayli, Vizsla has a great nose. Some of the V owners here rave about how good their dogs are. I had one when I was your age but she didnt hunt. She sure liked to point tweety birds and grasshoppers.

Is this the kind of dog you have?

It depends on the individual dog, the line, what the breeder bred for, etc.

bayli, mabey you should ask your gram if the puppys have ever gone to a hunting family and made good hunters?

does your dad or mom hunt?

Do you hunt?

Would you like to make this a hunting dog?

You dont have to hunt to teach a dog to hunt then you could attend a field trial or hunt test to show everyone how great of a dog you have trained :D

Bayli,

There will be some organization there down under that conducts something like our AKC hunt tests.

They are a great way to get started.

I think your dog has shown you that he loves to hunt. You just need to find a forum to hunt him in.

Your challenge would be finding training grounds and birds.

Best regards,

Margaret

Sadly most of Australian hunting has been stomped into the
dirt by gun hating jandle wearing bunny huggers, NSW is one of the states no longer game bird hunting.

Bayli ask around at school and see if there are any other kids that hunt or now about hunting. Also ask mum and step dad if there are anyone they now that hunt birds.

The more questions you ask and the more people you ask will get you some answers.

If you can get some pigeons then we can help you start to teach your pup to become a hunting dog.

yea it should be easy for me to get some pigions. next time i got to the bird shop up the road basicly

and my mum and step dad would only tell me to stop wasting my time ... as with everything i do lol

i think i can get my friends together an we can go hunting together if we find a decent place.

and if we want the laws of hunting in nsw to be changed ... you gotta get the kids involved !

oh an when i have been taking my dog walking lately i noticed he points ALOT ...and its not just at birds an cats anymore ... he points at people walking past and and other dogs . is that weird ?

Bayli,

You go, girl! Get in there and do it!

Your pup's behavior seems very, well, above average. That's a good thing.

The most awesome point my V gave as a puppy was on a box turtle.

Hi Bayli,

The first thing to do is to get your dog excited about birds. There are many ways to do this, but here are the two I know of based on whether you have have someone to help you.

Either way, it involves showing pigeons to the dog, letting the bird fly away and the dog briefly chase the bird to the end of a check cord.

A check cord is just a long leash, say 12 feet long.

If you have a friend to help, hold your dog on the check cord, have your helper walk say 30 yards away, pace back and forth some and when you're sure your dog is watching have them release the pigeon.

If your dog wants to chase the bird, that's great. Let them chase after the bird to the end of the check cord. Try to make it a soft stop at the end. No matter what, praise your dog in a big way. You want birds to be the most fun thing on the planet.

If you don't have a helper, things are a little different. At first, you have to be careful that the powerful wings of the pigeon don't scare the dog. You do this by having your hand(s) around both of the bird's wings till you release and you release away from the dog. Sounds easy, but the dog will eventually be jumping and trying to get the bird. Work hard to keep the pigeon from flapping into your dog's face. You want this to be a positive experience in every way.

Either way, do 3-4 birds and call it quits. Always end on a positive note. Do it 3-4 days a week. On the other days, practice teaching recall, heeling, that sort of thing.

When you've done it for a week or so, come back and ask us about the next step. In the meantime, let us know how it's going.

Patience is the number one thing that is required to train a dog. Don't get in a hurry and don't be tempted by shortcuts. Just hang in there.

Bayli,

Also when showing the pigeon to your dog dont let him grab the bird but it is ok to let him taste the feathers. This will also help build his excitment to want them.

He may try and pull your arm out so be prepared. He may be small but he is very strong and quick.

What kind of pigeons are you able to get? Are they Homers? If they are than this is a bonus because you can let them fly away and they will return to their home so you can use them the next day.
