Nails

Just wondering if any of you GSP owners ever needed to trim your dogs nails down? For some reason my dogs look a little long and this weekend during hunting he broke an end off and bothered him. Looked like he was running on his "heels" and wore down the pads and was bleeding from the pads. Is this something my vet should look at?

I keep ours trimmed down, but not too far...

Is there a guide line or something to follow. I know with some dogs they turn white and you clip that off. Petsmart sell trimmers?

We trim our GSP's and V's nails once a week.

I trim them off with a scissors type nail trimmer, then I round them off with a sandpaper wheel on my Dremel.

Trim a little each time. As you trim, the quick in their nail will recede.

It also helps to have some stypic powder or gel handy for when you accidently get the quick.

On darker nails, where you can't see the quick, use the curve at the tip of the nail as a guide and cut it in the middle of the curve. Super glue also works to stop the bleeding, but I prefer the gel or styptic powder.

our dogs spend a fair amount of time in there kennels. we have brrom finished concrete as the floor. have not had to trim a nail since then!

I am finding that some dogs just grow a better nail or less of them. I have a bitch that gets lots of go time and also is on concrete but her nails grow faster than my other dogs. A year or so ago I had her break one on a foot and wow that shuts a dog down. I do trim hers from time to time if needed.
One thing I believe is her nails are hard hard and some of the other dogs are noticibly softer.
10 seconds and it is all fixed up!
