Puppy vs. Adult weird kcal difference

Post by nanney1 » Wed Sep 19, 2018 6:38 pm

Adult food is listed as 3,429 ME per kg and 316 kcals per cup. The puppy food is 3,490 ME per kg and 291 kcals per cup. To me this is confusing. I would expect the puppy food with higher ME would also have higher KCALS per cup. Odd. Just looking at those numbers, it seems as if the adult and puppy are very similar. But, if you only look at kcal per cup, the average consumer would surmise that there is more energy in the adult version.

The adult version is specified for Maintenance though.

A good adult dog food and a good puppy food are very similar in formulation though the puppy food usually has more dairy based ingredients. I do not like to feed the puppy food other than to start the pups on dry food. But as soon as they are eating I switch to the same food mother is eating as it seems to help me keep the puppies from getting too heavy to quickly. I want the pups to be lean and muscled without carrying extra weight or growing too rapidly that stresses the hips and other bones and joints. Anyway it is what has worked for me for years and besides it is cheaper.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

All performance adult Dog food that I have used is Higher in fat and protein than their Performance puppy food. That is my reason for feeding puppy food for the first six
months. Basically the same reason Ezzy does not.

The OP's question does make you wonder why the food with higher ME per kg would be lower in kcals per cup.....Cj

I feed PPP for adult and puppy and for the puppy, I stick with the suggested amounts while monitoring for any changes needed.
With my setters, I want to see a puppy's ribs and lots of energy.
I suppose what I'm saying is that I trust the research that Purina has done.

For those that switch to adult quickly, do you switch to a basic 21/10 type of adult food, or a performance 26/18, 24/20, 30/20 adult food?

All my dogs that are not puppies are on performance 30/20 all the time. I just feed a little less in summer......Cj

Straight to the performance though I am not convinced you have to.
