terrible injury

Post by captaincoot » Sat Sep 06, 2014 6:32 pm

Its bad guys :( browndog has a major injury and I don't know what to do. Some how he cut the end of his tail. OK maybe not the worst injury in the world but it won't heel because he keeps licking it. Worst thing is he gets blood on the walls from wagging his tail. Anyone have this before. I'll ask my vet on Monday. I want to see how smart you are :) Thanks Guys

What I'd do: I am not a vet.

Buy one of those lampshade dog hats/cone so he can't lick the tail. Can be bought at any pet store.

Smear the would in polysporin and wrap it with clean gauze.

I don't like to glue it as you may be gluing in bacteria= infection.

Should do until you see the vet Monday.

(Fortunately we have a 24/7 emergency clinic here.)

Use EMT gel, vet wrap, and crate him. A common injury. Problem is they tend to reinjure it.

I had a litter of sleddogs once that were such happy dogs their tails never stopped and they bled from both ears and tails. I took to painting ears and tails with surgical cement. I didn't have to use tape and the wound was protected enough to heal. At least until the next time they got to wagging their tails against the truck.
