Thin Coat 13 month Setter
Thin Coat 13 month Setter
So my setter has always had a thin coat and even at 13 months old it has not thickened up much at all. Have any of you folks had setters like this? Does it get thicker over time?
I'm actually more concerned about him getting tore up in the field and the woods than I was my old shorthair.
Is it something to be concerned about it just accept it for what it is?

Setter hair varies considerably...thin can be a blessing in several ways.

How thin?
I have one thick and one thin here. Haven't found it to be a problem.

Maybe check for thyroid or allergy issues? I don't think you should be seeing skin.

There are a lot of folks that have or have been around many setters. Pictures would help.

Re:
Is this what you see all year? My two setters have allergies to some summer plants in the field . From June to Oct ( first frost here), they have very little hair on their belly , groin and inside back legs.CTPaul wrote:Not so thin that I'm thinking there is a health issue but thinner than I expected.
Looking at his chest from the front you can see through to his skin.

I've only had him since December and he had a very thin coat at that point too. Here is the best photo I can get.

Lose that collar.
His coat in other visible areas looks fine.

That area of the neck is often hairless in dogs due to the collar.

The coat will likely get thicker with a little more age as well.

My setter is about 18 months now, still a thin coat. Honestly I really like it, I don't have to trim her at all. She rarely catches any stickers except for early fall the 'beggers lice' we call them, but they stick to everything. She still sheds some but not real bad. Swims fast too, easily out swims my brothers wirehairs.
