Insect repellent, antiviral drug detected in jerky pet treats

Chicken jerky treats consumed by dogs that became sick have been found to be tainted by the insect repellent DEET and the drug amantadine, according to a veterinary pathologist leading an independent probe of the ongoing pet treat mystery.

Samples of the treats were solicited through a survey conducted by the Veterinary Information Network (VIN), an online community for the profession and parent of the VIN News Service.

Dr. Kendal Harr, head of the chicken jerky treat team for VIN, said samples of suspect treats were submitted by a variety of veterinarians whose patients became ill after eating the treats. A total of 16 animals were involved, some of which had consumed more than one type of treat, she said. Whether the adulterants are responsible for making the pets sick is unclear.

“The clinical significance is unknown … but these are contaminated treats,” Harr said. “I think what the illegal residues tell us is that we have a contaminated food source...”

I don't understand how anyone still buys these things!

DO NOT fall for stuff that is DISTRIBUTED by an American company, but is MANUFACTURED in China.

READ THE LABEL.

BTW, Walmart (et al) are the biggest culprit of bringing in this sort of crap.

Getting off my soapbox now,

Just to put some of this in perspective, this problem dates back to 2007. So what they are saying is there is the POSSIBILITY of 5000 dog deaths in 7 years. Wonder how the millions of other dogs eating the jerky escaped if it was a problem with the jerky? That is always a concern of mine when you see something like this. I think I would quit using till something was figured out for sure, but it sounds like there is something else causing the problem other than the jerky. And that is what all of the researchers are saying too. They have been unable to point to any one cause, so that makes it sound like they are thinking they haven't found a single cause for any of this yet.

Beware and do whatever you feel comfortable with but also be aware of the fact that no one knows what or if there is a real problem.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

We have found over the years when food is involved it doesn't just affect one animal out of a thousand but if one dies then many more will die and a lot more will be very ill. Does that make sense to you? In this scenario, there has been on average of 700 out of several million that have died over the whole year. it would be most unlikely that a single issue would be responsible over that long of a time and that few out of the total animals that were involved. Hope this helps.

We aren't talking about a disease so the immune system isn't in play here. Have you heard of anyone being immune to a poison? Or a gunshot?

Are you saying that there is no immune system response to poisons ?

ezzy,
I just saw on the News that they are recalling 1.8 Million pounds of beef that is tainted with E. Coli.
A few dozen people got sick.

So to paraphrase your statement : "Wonder how the millions of other people eating the beef escaped if it was a problem with the beef?
