Frontline and Heartguard

Post by rons » Tue Jan 28, 2014 5:02 am

Tried to search these subjects first before posting. Visit with the vet this past weekend and we discussed Heartguard. My GWP has been tested about 6 months ago and is negative. The vet wanted to test again and sell me Heartguard. In the past I only used Frontline to my hunting dogs and never had a problem. Do I need both products ? We do have mosquito problems in the summer. Advise is appreciated. Thanks

Frontline is for fleas & ticks
Heartguard is for Heartworms

They both do something different.

There are cheaper options than Heartguard (look into ivermectin, which is the active ingredient). I buy the giant dog sized frontline plus on the internet, put it into a glass vial, and use a syringe to dole out the correct amount per body weight. This will save you a lot of $ over the life of your dog.

The best and most economical combination I have found is apple ivermectin paste (Durvet) for heartworm prevention and the Seresto Collar by Bayer for fleas and ticks, it is very similar to Advantix.
