embarrassing crate training issue

Post by Goyle » Fri Oct 18, 2013 3:22 am

Hi everyone, seems my yellow lab is having some problems with crate training.
She is currently 3 months old and I thought we were over these issues until tonight.
When I first brought her home, I had some difficulties the second and third night I had here. I thought I was actually sleeping through her whines to go out because she was peeing in the crate.
So, i turned to the setting alarms for every two hours and taking her out. I did this for roughly two weeks and my body got used to it and I'd just naturally wake up to let her out every time.
But one night, instead of waking up to the sound of whining, i woke up to the sound of licking. Bewildered to what she could possibly be licking, I shined a light in to see she had peed in the crate and was actually licking it up. She had no where for her body to go, because the crate is the correct size for her. But this was horrifying. No whining. No scratching. Not a sound but the licking...

Well, as time went by, she had a few small accidents, but nothing major. She seemed to be able to hold it longer, for perhaps 3 to 4 hours a night. Then came tonight.
I let her out roughly at 12am, she had been sleeping since 9. but then I could hear it in my dreams. That licking sound. When i woke up at 3 AM there it was... I shined the light in the kennel and a massive puddle, smack in the middle of the crate and she was licking it up....

I don't seem to understand two things in this whole situation.
1) Why does she not make any whining noises when she knows she has to pee? She has had the same potty spots, same routines, few to no accidents. She eats three meals a day, within a half hour of each other. Always fresh water is left for her until roughly 2 hours before bed time. It seems so random when she can't hold it.

2) The more disturbing part to me is that she licks this up. I believe the whole reason I'm crate training is because they don't want to mess their sleeping/eating den area, but not only does she not mind peeing in the kennel, but wants to perform clean up duty as well, without notification.

Please, can anyone help me out or at least tell me I'm not alone in this? I have no idea what to do at this point. I feel like if I keep setting alarms to let her out, she will continue not to wake me up to go out. But if i don't set alarms she will just pee and start drinking it.

How much does she weigh and what is the size of the crate? Has she been taken to the vet to see if she has an issue with her bladder?

She weighs ~25 pounds currently, and she is in a kennel which she can barely completely stand in and side to is maybe about her body and a half wide. And no, she has not gone in to the vet for a little less then a week ago.

Use the search function and google, look up UTI, see if some of the symptoms fit.
