Tick Prevention?

What are you guys doing for tick prevention? Topical, collar, whatever. Just needs to prevent them from transmitting disease.

After several decades without a problem, both of my dogs have had erlichia or similar. One just back to being himself, the other just come down with it.

From what I understand, Advantix II is the only OTC topical that repels ticks. That being said, I just ordered a 3 pack of the Frontline Plus for my Brittany pup. It kills but doesn't repel. I figured it was a little safer around the kids for the first couple days after application. I live in Northern Utah and believe I only need to worry about ticks, not fleas.

Good luck with Advantage II. It isn't designed to prevent ticks. I'm sure it's great for fleas though.

Advantix II is for fleas, ticks, flies, mosquitos, etc.

True , and it is water repellent so the effectiveness does not decline when dogs who live in the house are shampooed, after a dirty run.

i stopped using the frontline and advantix after findin ticks on my 2 dogs. I am sure it works but my thinking is that u just check them after each hunt and pull any off and watch for fleas at the same time. Recently i have tried a product for horses and dogs from biogroom that seemed to work pretty good actually. they advertise it keeps working for over 30days too, plus its cheaper than the other options.

I'm using frontline or advantix depending on what I have on hand. I also give them a spray down with Adams Flea and Tick when needed. It seems like I remember several folks posting that they used the stuff at wal mart with good results and it is much cheaper. I don't recall the name of the product.

i seen them at tractor supply.
you have to buy a box .
only PURPLE ONES.
i think box is like 30 dollars or less.
1 tag lasts for year or season .
i cut mine in half as they are for cattle.
boy do they work on ticks etc.
you put them on your dog collars.
dont know affects longterm on them but a LOT are using them.

Have used Preventic collars the past two years. Used Frontline for years, applied year round, and still ended up treating Lyme, Ehrlichia and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Might have to give the tags a try.

I used them for the first time last year. Didn't find a single tick all season.
I don't believe they work to repel fleas though.

I use bio spot I also spray a kennel dip mix on all trees and shrubs that are around. Dont get ticks or fleas this way.

Revolution prevents the American Dog Tick but it doesn't work for deer ticks. It's also a monthly heartworm preventative.

We used K9 Advantix II with much luck but this year my vet does not carry it so we tried frontline plus. I have never pulled so many ticks of my dogs ever. Will never use it again. Was thinking about the new Seresta collar? anybody have any luck?

Yeah I am using it and so far I love it. It was 29.99 after the rebate for they say 8 months of protection. It is Advantix II in a collar that meters small amounts on the skin. It is even safe to use if your dogs are around cats.

It is a very sturdy collar too and comes with reflectors. If your dog gets caught up it will come off without breaking.

Even at 49.99 without a rebate its a good deal. If it continues to work like it has so far, I will definitely put it on my "money well spent" list.

i have lately used the purple cattle tags.

For quite a few years I used a solution of Pymetherin on my back packs, pant legs and even on my pack goats- nary a tick. But I always used the expensive stuff for the dogs. I decided to try the purple cattle tags- cut them in thirds and attached them to the two PP's collars. I take them off when we get home- no ticks so far. Bought a pack of 25 for $31.99. cut in thirds = 75 = 43 cents a tag. I'll end up giving many away and clipping one on the back pack etc.

That cattle tag sounds like a good deal for keeping them off. I used one of those collars for tic's at Bi Mart one year, think they worked fine. Not sure because I also use a tic spray. As long as I spray once a week, I'm tic free. I was told by a vet some years ago to spray with any spray that had pyrethrins in it. the stuff I use now is .020% of the stuff. I think I found .050% in the past. I only get tic's on the dogs when I miss spraying. I get more tic's on me than they get on them. I'm thinking I should stick a cattle tag in my pocket when going out! Probably the ingredient's are more important than the brand.

The python tags work really well they last for about 6 months the purple ones are the ones I use.I take the whole tag and wrap it around the collar and use zip ties to hold it in place.

Must be carrying a large pack when hunting. Sorry could not resist.

The ticks start out so small that they are hard to find after a hunt, brushing does not get them. I have more trouble with the Britts than the GSP's.

I use the front line, which does kill them but once they bite, then I spray with what ever I happen to have. I have used 30% Deet Bens or Cutter which works great but Do not make a habit of it.

I use Frontline Plus, I've never found a tick on my dog and he is running in the tall grass/woods constantly. That said he's black/white so they may be impossible to see but I've never been able to feel one when checking.

Used only Advantix since it hit the market. Never seen a tick stick/engorge on my dog since. You might see one but it is just lying there , half dead. LOTS of ticks in ON this year- more than ever.

WE pay $80. for 6 months of treatment up here. Much cheaper in USA as you know.

...but there isn't a chemical or shot on earth that can help more than a religious tailgate check and a hardcore slicker brush out after time in the field! If you've ever had a dog or a family member suffer thru Lyme(I've had both), it makes you pay WAY more attention to prevention! Nasty stuff, 'em darn buggers!
