Safeguard horse paste ?

Post by Wildweeds » Sun Apr 07, 2013 11:08 pm

What about the dosage of "Safeguard" 10% fenbendozole horse paste? In multiple searches I come up with 1cc per 5 pounds of body weight.By my math a 50 pounder would take 10 cc's and at 10% active ingrediants in the carrier would equal 1cc of actual worming agent. It sure seems like alot until you consider only 10% of what you got sucked into the dosing syringe is actual active dose.
It is my understanding that the same dose above is required for three days in a row for worm removal.

Does anyone have firsthand experiance with what is the dose and duration of treatment for giardia?

I use the safeguard goat wormer since the liquid is easier. I've had it miss worms that were caught by the cheap and old reliable peiperzine. At least in young pups anyways. I wormed bi weekly from two weeks to 8 with safeguard and had wormy pups. The 4.95 walmart wormer cleared them up.
Girardia I'd look to albon or corid. I just do a cap full in the water bowl.
Also a pro-biotic for a while.

We used the goat version as well; it was readily available at our local feed store, along with some other cost-effective deworming products.

Some good information on dewormers here: http://www.beaglesunlimited.com/health/ ... -treatment

I also picked up a tube of the safe-guard10%..the way I read it is two clicks or marks for every 250lbs of horse or one mark or click for every 250lbs of cattle ...so I was thinking I should be at 1/4 of a click for a 50 pound dog.....someone correct me if i'm wrong

Wrong. The effective dose is way different among the species. Yu can look up fenbendazole in a veterinary pharmaceutical book to see the differences.

Fenbendazole, liquid for goats, cc/5#, five days for coccidia, ten for giardia.

Albon wont do anything for giardia. Pretty sure fenbendazole is not effective against coccidia, but hey, they come up with new things every day. and its been 11 years since i was in school. :)
