What Size Barrels for Kennel

Post by Bberry20 » Mon Mar 04, 2013 8:43 am

I am getting my kennel for my dogs, and was wondering what size barrels do everyone use for them? I think the 55 gallon may be too big? SHould i go with a 33 gallon? My GSP is 65# and his room mate is 50# pit mix. Would one barrel work? They currently both share the extra large wire kennel inside and sleep just fine. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Use the 55 gallon size. The dog has to be able to turn around comfortably. One per dog, even if they double up sometimes.

My experence with barrels wheather metal or plastic is that sweat inside when the temoerature is cold, the heat from the dogs body forms condensation, I had some plastic barrels years ago, looked inside to check on a dog and it looked like it had been raining inside, bedding and dog were soaked. That took care of any barrels in my kennels. Just my 2cents worth...

Drill some vent holes in the top. I've never had a condensation issue. I prefer blue or white to black. Black is useless for summer.

I have used plastic 55 gallon barrels for years. A year or two ago I bought a $300 insulated dog house. I had two dogs in the pen and they kept using the barrel. I took the barrel out of the pen and they started using the dog house. I thought they were just used to the barrel. About six months later I put a barrel back in that pen just out of curiosity, the two dogs used it immediately and never slept another night in the $300 dog house.
