I've got a 9 year old GSP who is recovering from Coon Hound Paralysis. Unfortunately an old shoulder injury is slowing the recovery. I was thinking of adding some fish oil to her diet to see if it might help. Can anyone help with dosages?
Thanks!

Re: Fish Oil
I give a tablespoon a day for a 40 pound dog but prefer joint care supplements ( capsules).
1000mg (1 mg. = .00018 tsps.) per 20 pounds
(You can give too much.)

Re: Fish Oil
Dosage depends on the concentration.
The one we use will provide 1200 mg per 1/2 tsp.
Also, be sure that there is enough Vit E to prevent oxidation (peroxidation) once it's inside the dog (or you).
You need 100 iu Vit E per 600 mg to 1200 mg of fish oil in order to accomplish this.
Oxidized fatty acids are 'free radicals'. Free radicals are bad stuff.

Re: Fish Oil
You would be better off using something with Perna for inflammation. There are a variety of peer reviewed studies on Perna, human, canine, guinea pig that show it almost as effective as medication. Ironically, people talk about other products that show no efficacy.
It works in a similar fashion to fish oil but formulations for dogs are readily available.

For inflammation I would probably go with prescription rymadyl. You may want think about a glucosamine supplement for long term relief.
