Best chews for dogs that don't chew very much?

Post by Hondo » Tue Dec 18, 2012 5:42 pm

My 2yr old lab has never been a big chewer even as a pup. However, I would like to find something that she would chew frequently to help keep her teeth white. She is developing tartar on her teeth and it is concerning me. I have tried brushing her teeth but I can't do it long enough or well enough to make a difference.

Any chews that are good for teeth that finicky dogs can't resist?

My GSP isn't a big chewer but he seems to love those Elk Antler chews. They're spendy but last forever.

See if your vet can get you a sample of CET or Enzadent chews.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Pig Ears are great.
My 13 year old dog has white teeth, clean gum lines, no plaque etc.
He has never had his teeth brushed or cleaned..... Just pig ears.

As mentioned on the dog food thread, I found improvement of teeth with Loyall opti cook feed along with the old standand,Milk Bone Dog bisquets. Elk antlers are also popular with my dogs.

For an outdoor only chew is Raw beef bones. You can have them cut any way you like from the butcher at most markets. I have had the knuckles cut off each end and then cut in half. Cut the long bone in thirds. Do not boil just freeze the unused bones. Most dogs will chew for hours.

For indoors you can buy white sterilized marrow bones. They are the cleaned hollow beef bones.
All pet supply catalogs have them.

A full 50% of the dogs I've had have broken molars with beef knuckle bones --- Never again !

The best chew IMO is a Kong.

Stuff it full of peanut Butter or a big milk bone and it will occupy them for hours.

Another thing I like to do is put a little dob of peanut butter in the top to plug the little hole then fill it full of yogurt and freeze it. Makes for a good outside treat on those summer days. If you use pro-biotic yogurt it will help with skin, coat and clear up any runny eyes.
