Rattlesnake Vaccine lump

Post by Lexus423 » Wed Oct 03, 2012 7:50 pm

My gsp received his first rattlesnake vaccine about a three weeks ago. We noticed a small lump on the injection site about a week ago that has grown into a golf ball lump today. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow. Anyone have this happen to them?

I had this happen to one of my dogs. The vet said that it was normal, it is the body fighting against the snake vaccine that builds the antibodies in the dog.

One of my pointers gets that bump after each year's vaccination, but it disappears after a week or so.

It is common and should go away soon.

Both of my dogs get a lump as well. Golf ball sounds a little big though. Generally the lumps on my dogs are fairly noticeable. Vet told me that it wasn't a big deal and said that lightly massaging the area might help it go down a little quicker.

Went to the vet. They took blood from the lump and determined that it was infected. The gave me antibiotics for 2 weeks and told me if it doesn't go down to bring him back so he can go under the knife. They then proceeded to ask if i wanted the rattlesnake booster.....I am thinking of searching for a new vet...am I crazy? why would they want to give him the booster when this is what happened with the original shot? He has never gotten an infection from any of his other vaccines.

I would doubt if the vacine had anything to do with an infection so there would be no reason not to get the booster.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Is the vaccine really worth it in your area?

Down here in FL it's pretty much useless because none of the indigenous venomous snakes are represented.

My lab got a large bump as well about 4 days after the shot, and it went away about 2 days after it appeared. His bump was pretty close to golf ball size but not quite there.

This seems like a good article about the vaccine. It talks about the typical vaccination lump, that a lot of our dogs get, that disappears on it's own. It also mentions 1 in 300 getting an abcess, and proper shot administration. It also speaks to species protection and cross species protection. I guess you have to decide how important the vaccination is to you, and whether it's worth skipping the 30 day booster.

Heard this from a friend of mine that used to give the rattlesnake vaccine to her dogs regularly.

One of her dogs developed a mast cell tumor at the site of the vaccine. Her vet indicated that the vaccine was the likely cause. She had it removed and contacted Red Rock to inform them of what happened.
Red Rock's response was to offer to pay for her vet bills in exchange for her signing a confidentiality agreement regarding her dog's reaction to their vaccine.

She declined.

I've known dogs who were vaccinated who got bit and I know dogs who didn't have the vaccination and got bit. In every case, the vaccinated dogs faired much better. Anti Venon is expensive.

But you have to ask - if the manufacturer is essentially paying people off to not talk about adverse reactions, how much can you rely on anecdotal evidence regarding its safety?
