fur loss
fur loss
Noticed a few tiny (dime sized) balding patches on the pooch. Going to call the vet, but I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before. He is eating and hasn't changed behavior and i don't see any redness or irritations. He also isn't chewing on the spots, or enough for me to notice. Nothing has changed in his diet, he is on Heart Guard and Certifect applied July 3.

Re: fur loss
Ringworm or demodectic mange can have this appearance. Your vet can tell between the two and figure out what you need to correct it.

Re: fur loss
It can also be bacterial, fungal other than ringworm, abrasion or any number of things. I expect some nicks and dings and if they aren't spreading, inflamed or bothering the dog, don't worry about it. His coat is a little thin, which can be a liver thing. You might try adding a little olive oil to his diet. A good tea tree oil shampoo would probably not be a bad idea, either.

Re: fur loss
It is hard to tell from the pictures but is there any symmetry to the hair loss?
Both ears, forelegs, eyes etc?

Nope.
Vet saw the pics and didn't feel we needed to rush in today. Got an appointment Thursday (closed Wed).

Looks like abrasions to me - went through a rough patch.

I was given antibiotics, antihistamine and a antibacterial shampoo. We shall see...

I don't think I've ever heard of a dog being allergic to BilJac liver treats, but who knows.mkleisch wrote:I think i figured it out. Bill Jack Liver Treats, was the only thing I changed... The kicker is I've been using them to give him the pills... Do'h We'll see if that was it.
By the way, make sure no one with asthma handles that shampoo. There have been problems with it.

Re: fur loss
Not always! My Pit Bull girl had demodex as a pup, and the first place she lost hair was on a toe. She actually only ever got one small spot on her face, but got a good few on her torso and legs. Demodex was the first thing I thought when I saw the pictures in this thread.Sharon wrote:Looks like abrasions to me - went through a rough patch.

mkleisch, you could always add some immune system boosters like astragalus to your pup's diet for a while. Won't hurt anything and can only help!
Re: fur loss
Was checked for mites by the vet and came up negative.

Doesn't appear to be a food/treat allergy reaction...

I had the same experience - no mites seen after a scraping. My vet put her on "Advantage Multi 55" and it cleared up the problem. ASK YOUR VET about it.mkleisch wrote:Was checked for mites by the vet and came up negative.

He's on Certifect. Is that better or different because of allergies?

Re: fur loss
I'm going to switch anyways, I haven't found much on the web, but the amitraz in Certifect appear to have caused some dogs issues in the past

Re: fur loss
Try the ProZyme supplement that's mentioned elsewhere and see if it helps. Solid livers sometimes have weak coat until they are older.
As far as your spot on treatment, Certifect is way overdoing it unless you have a huge tick problem. Drop back to Advantix II or Frontline.

Re: fur loss
consider a shampoo that has ketoconazole in it for ringworm and use it weekly. In the beginning you said no itching to date, just fur loss as pictured. If nothing has changedof actually worsened as to the amount of fur loss and the skin scrapings were negative for mites, fungal issues would be high on the list.
Re: fur loss
I've noticed a few more little spots of hair loss while the older patches are starting to grow in. I am wondering about the Flea and Tick meds and am wanting to switch that. Should i skip a month? I will also be consulting my vet. I also sent some pics to Certifect and they called me back. I will be curious to see what they have to say as well.

Re: fur loss
I switched to Frontline, changed to Purina Pro Plan Performance and added some ProZyme. It seems to be getting better and looks as if all of those tests and meds were just a waste of $$.
