Turd Gobbler

Post by nebraskabirdman » Thu Feb 02, 2012 11:40 am

I was just wondering if anyone else had a dog that recycles their turds. My 6 month old just started trying to eat hers. She seems to like them fresh out of the oven if you now what I mean. I almost lost my lunch the other day when I caught her in the act. YUK :x

She is not the first and only. They do sale a product that you mix with their food that makes their feces taste bad to them. I know you would think it already does.

Check the pet stores or your vet.

You might want to try a different food. When my dog was young he would eat my older dog's turds. She was on a lamb and rice formula. A year after I put her down I tried a lamb and rice formula with the male, having forgotten about the old problem. It was not long before he started eating his own. I switched to a chicken based food and he stopped imediately. I guess he likes lamb. Must be part coyote.

Any dog will do that if it has the chance. Only real solution is picking it up the feces right away. Personally i don't really care. It is less for me to pick up plus i don't kiss my dogs. :)

The official name to stool eating is called coprophagia. There is lots of info on the web if you do a search.

In many cases it is a lack of digestive enzymes in the gut. I have found that PROZYMES works well. http://www.prozymeproducts.com/

My neighbors dog did this as well and they put pineapple in her food for a bit. Not sure how it works, but it did for them.

Gotta love those poop kissess!! :P

I do pick up after my pup, I guess I'll just have to be faster at it. Like I said, once the bread is out of the oven, its the old spin around and then snack time! I'll have to be quick on my feet. I do feed science diet lamb and rice. Maybe I will try a chicken or beef based food to see if that helps starve her cravings for the all mighty brown cigar!!

Have a hand full of rocks.by the back door. When the dog is done and goes in for the mouth full, let em fly.

That's the same with me. Except when I'm POed at them for something I run right out there and pick it up " NO TREATS FOR YOU ".

Use fresh pineapple, not canned. It works!

my dogs are the same, they won't touch their own but now they love to get in the calf pen and enjoy the buffet "cow pies"

maybe the sweet feed that attracts them to this?

It used to drive me nuts but I got over it a long time ago and like some others have said, it helps me with the clean up. :)
