When to switch to adult food?

Post by RugersMom » Fri Dec 23, 2011 1:30 pm

I was wondering when you guys suggest switching to adult dog food. My vet said to follow what the bag says but if that were the case I would be feeding her puppy food for a year.

Many, including myself, never use puppy food. A Performance adult dog food has about the same combinations as puppy food. You also get much more for your money when buying adult food.
The food I use is 30% protein and 20% fat... Performance food. The puppy food from the same brand name is 28% protein and 20% fat. Why would i buy puppy?

I don't use it either but there is a difference in the vitamins and minerals. I just like the results I get better with an adult food rather thn a puppy food.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Use a small kibble good adult feed that the puppy can handle. Start before the pup is weaned, and don't use a puppy feed. It doesn't have to be 30/20, 26/18 or so is fine.

My dogs and puppies never get puppy feed. I have always used adult feed and have seen great results.

Why not feed her food for all life stages? Orijen has an all life stages formula.

Orijen is a rip-off and not suitable for the vast majority of dogs on this forum.

The powers that be say DHA is an element of nutrition puppies need for better development. It is listed in most quality puppy formulas. It is available in fish oils. I have no idea what it is really, and don't know if it is in premium adult feeds, even if not listed.

i do. i use CANIDAE ALL LIFE STAGES .at 8 weeks i am going to feed my puppy a small bag of what breeder had him on THEN when i have like 1/4 of food left, say around his 12 week or so, i will slowly start mixing in my CANIDAE ALS food.
i get it for 45 dollars a bag at 44 lbs in bag.
I get free bag every 10 bags .
so i will have toby and new pup on same food .
free bag thrown in every so often.
