Found my lost dog 24 hours later

Post by Troy08er » Tue Sep 27, 2011 7:32 pm

Yesterday while running my dogs I ended up loosing my Hannah dog for 24 hours. She's been home around 1hr. was told she was bumping some quail when she was found. The guy that found her said she was covered in cow patties and extremely dehydrated looks like she's dropped about 3-4 lbs.. She's been drinking water but has been thrown up some then drooling. She hasn't started eaten anything at this time.Anything special I should do or look out for. Thanks

Normally , dogs that are dead tired , don't want to eat.

If she doesn't eat at breakfast /or continues to vomit to-morrow, I would see the vet.
I'm sure you know to have lots of cold water available for her.

I would just run a round of Safeguard through her...Go to the feed store in the horse section and a solid inch on the finger then swipe in the mouth once a day for about 5 days,,cow patties and stagnant water can give the runs...

now if you do not see any improvements with in 24 hours or there are any other clinical signs that she is not doing good GET TO THE VET ASAP

At a certain level of dehydration, drinking plain water doesn't help. A solution of sugar and salt is needed. The vomiting is a sign. Look for signs of severe dehydration like a sticky mouth, sunken eyes, etc. If you see that take the dog to the vet.

Do you know how to give an enema?

And no offense, a dog in this condition should not be wormed.

Not looking on the worming part of it more the girardia effects which if the dog was drinking any standing water this can also lead to those issues

But again if some symptoms are already having an effect ..I wouldn't hesitate getting my dog to a vet for a check up and any medical care..vet probably will give some flagyl will do the same as the safeguard on the girardia and also have some extra stomach settle affects also

maybe even some lactated ringer to get the hydration level back up

I would have given him a regular Fleet enema first thing, then let the vet see him.

I'm very sorry. :(
When we let a dog off the leash so many things can go wrong - coyote attack, blue algae, barbed wire wound, hit by a car, stolen, lost etc. It's a risky hobby.

I would like to thank everyone for the dehydration tips and kind words. Wish I would of saw some of these post sooner and I've learned from it. Don't know if it was from dehydration or bacteria infection. Hunting the first part of the season it can get hot in my area. I've always carried water while hunting my dogs but would like to know if you guys carry anything else to keep your dogs hydrated. Almost lost my Gator dog last year from a bite while hunting then this happy, been a tuff year. I'll move on and start looking for a new pup to train for next years hunting season. I do a ton of hunting during bird season, so injuires and accidents happen. That's why I like have two hunting buddies around.HAPPY HUNTING and thanks
