forget everything you thought you knew about feeding

Post by Scott Linden » Mon Jun 06, 2011 7:24 pm

Think you know how/what/when to feed for maximum performance? Think again. I did, until I interviewed Brian Zanghi, a Purina scientist. Listen to the interview, and count the number of things you should - or shouldn't - be doing.

Little condescending to assume that people don't know a lot of that.

I enjoyed that interview Scott. There's always something to learn. Thanks.

Sounded like the facts that have come from the research that has been done over the last decade or two. Think most of us have heard it several times before though some just can't believe it as they continue to think a dog is a human.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Cripes man, listen to the entire interview and tell me you didn't learn anything. Just trying to help here; glad you're the nutrition expert. I will consider interviewing you next time.

No apology necessary. It appears you Cajuns are quite the experts, sorry I wasted your time offering up the interview.

I did listen to it and it sounds like he was reading verbatim from Purina (they are a whole lot more than ProPlan, by the way) promo literature. I've sold ProPlan for fifteen years and have a lot of dogs that eat it, as well as a lot that eat Diamond Premium. I don't really see that much difference between PPP and the Diamond on most of my dogs. Most companion hunting dogs wouldn't be considered performance dogs, anyway.

Was he rehearsing for ProPlan's debut as the new exclusive food sponser of PF/QF?

No sir I am no expert, however I have spent extensive time with Purina research scientist and I have access to all of the work done on sled dogs, conditioning and feeding at Cornell, not an expert at all but I do believe I know one or two things.

Maybe the reason it sounds like he was reading verbatim from Purina is because he wrote it. Purina has possibly done more reserch on dogs than all of the other dog food companies combined and they use it in their ads and products.

And Scott, there is no need to get your feelings hurt because some of us have heard or read this same material before. There are not many secrets in the dog food world and who ever made the statement about placing them all in a plain brown bag and we wouldn't know the difference between them is just about true. Which dog food we feed has more to do with the owners than it does with the dogs. Thanks for linking to the interview, as it is always good for people who haven't heard it before as well as the review for those of us that have.

Most of the research done at Purina is food chemistry and not nutrition. They are truly experts at taking every part of the corn plant and making into a below average product at a very large premium that keeps dogs alive

Don't kid yourself Ezzy.

There are lots of good feeds out there. Pick the one that makes you happy and go with it.

I think the thing that bothers me about this thread is the title "forget everything you thought you knew about feeding". It's down right condescending and insulting. Yes, there was good info in the interview, but please don;t tell me I'm an idiot and don't know squat, then expect me to be wowed by what you have to say.

You are. Just look at the posts on here about Pro Plan. They are like a broken record. Medium dogs eating 6 cups and losing weight. It is $45 a bag near me and sells for more than foods without every form of corn known to man.

Its worth $28 a bag just like Pro Pac HP, which is a much better food.
