Pyrometra. What do you guys no about it?

Post by 12 Volt Man » Fri Mar 31, 2006 2:37 pm

I got a call from a gentleman that owns a female which he had bred to my dog Cooper last month. He said the Vet had to do an emergency spaying. Said it was Pyrometra or Pyromethra something that sounded like that. Looks like she will be ok, but she lost the pups.

Did a Yahoo search and this is what I found.
http://www.thepetcenter.com/sur/pyo.html
"When I was a kid, I used to pray every night for a new "puppy". Then I realized that the Lord, in his wisdom, didn't work that way. So I just stole one and asked him to forgive me".

Here is another link to more information about pyo.

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/pyometra.html

A friend, had a bitch with open pyo that they were able to treat, and she went on to have 2 successful pregnancies after her infection. The Merck Manual says that about 90% of bitches will be fertile after a bout with open pyo and antibiotic treatment, however only 50% of bitches with closed pyo and antibiotic treatment will be fertile. Pyo is also very likely to re-occur, 70% of bitches that are treated for pyo with antibiotics will have another attack within 2 years of the initial infection.

Sorry about the loss of the puppies, but glad to hear that the bitch will be ok.
