limping gsp

Post by steamer » Mon Mar 07, 2011 9:13 pm

My 1 year old male started limping badly on his front left leg tonight. We played in the yard for about half hour or so then dinner in his kennel then some rest then i brought him inside he sat on my lap for a few then it was off to his crate for the night. This is when i noticed him limping he wouldn't put any weight on his front left leg. I layed him down and checked him out, his toes seemed ok looked between them lightly, squeezed them moved them around, moved up to fore foot it seems like this is were the problem is might be, slightly swollen but hard to tell. I can move it some but I cant straighten it out very good I didn't try to force it or any thing but it did seem to bother him some. I checked his elbow and shoulder and they seem ok, no problem with movement and he didnt act like there was any pain there. He did try to put some weight on it later but didnt try to hard. Just wondering what possible injury this could be.

Sprained wrist would be my guess.

Check his nails too. My GSP got his nails clipped too short and then dug on some hard ground in my backyard. His nails were all the way down to the quick on two of his toes and he could hardly walk on his leg for over a week.

im thinking sprain also .he seems alot better today. he seems like he walking ok . i dont think he is favoring it today its hard to tell. I dont see any swelling at this point. he is full of energy and ready to run but im keeping him crated and kenneled for now and on a leash to and from the kennel. he is going to the vet tomorrow also. just to get checked out. what should i expect at the vet as far as tests. range of motion x ray that type of thing should i do the wait and see thing or go to a specialist. i know my vet will lead me the right way but i just wanted to know what other people have done with front leg injuries. thanks for any help

First thing that come to mind is PANO - If your feeding a 30/20 food or higher that could be the cause especially if he has grown to fast causing pain in the long bones of his front legs. I have seen where a lower protein food will help reduce the pain and limping. Rest for a while will help some too.
